$avings $tarter Kit Impacts
Description of Program:
$aving$ $tarter Kits for parents were utilized by MSU Extension Agents during April - June, 2004. The kits were funded through an Extension mini-grant and contributions from the Montana Credit Unions for Community Development and First Interstate BancSystem. The kit was designed to provide learning activities for parents to use with their children ages four through ten for teaching the value of saving. Contents of the kit included:

2. Savings Stickers
3. Family Activity Materials
4. Money on a Bookshelf Program
5. Activity and Coloring Books
6. Track’n Your Savings Goals MontGuide and Register
7. Evaluation
8. Tips for Teaching Children to Save (sharing activity)
9. State of Montana Governor’s Citation
Impacts:
• 58% encouraged their children to use the $uper $aver Funbook to record their savings.
• 63% opened a savings account for their children.
• 64% shared information about saving methods they used as children.
• 87% discussed the concept of donating to a charity with their children.
• 93% discussed a spending wish list with their children.
• 50% completed the Family Savings Goal worksheet.
• 80% talked about a spending wish list with their children.
• 52% indicated they helped their children make a piggy bank.
• 56% bought a piggy bank for their children.
• 36% reported they visited the Web sites provided.
• 11% ordered parent guides for the Money on a Bookshelf program.
• 24% printed out one or more the parent guides from the Nevada Extension Web site.
• 70% encouraged their children to read and color pages in the coloring books provided.
• 47% started using the Track’n Your Savings register.
• 22% requested additional copies of the savings register.
• 52% recommended the Track’n Your Savings register to friends, relatives, and teachers.
