Candidates in the MSU Teacher Education Program must complete the following Clinical Experience placement requirements:

Candidates Completing a Teaching Major

Elementary Education (K-8) majors are required to complete:

  • 6 Major Methods, Practicum I (minimum 80 hours clinical work), and Practicum II (minimum 90 hours clinical work).  Reflective Educator Project (REP) elements include professional goal setting, studying learner context, collecting objective data on progress, and professional reflection (1-3 lessons depending on practicum level).
  • Student Teaching – 14 week placement; requires full Reflective Educator Project (REP), including systematic data collection for 4+ lessons and a formal research presentation.
  • If you are adding:
    • Special Education Endorsement – 9 weeks for major & 10 weeks SPED; full REP for major.
    • Reading Endorsement – 9 weeks in major & 5 weeks in Reading Internship; full REP required for major. 

Secondary Education (5-12) majors are required to complete:

  • Major Methods & Practicum (minimum 60 hours clinical work). REP elements include professional goal setting, studying learner context, collecting objective data on progress, and professional reflection.
  • Student Teaching – 14 week placement; requires a full Reflective Educator Project, including systematic data collection for 4+ lessons and a formal research presentation.
  • If you are adding:
    • Special Education Endorsement – 9 weeks for major & 10 weeks SPED; full 
      REP for major.
    • Reading Endorsement – 9 weeks in major & 5 weeks in Reading Internship; full REP for major. 

K-12 Education majors are required to complete:

    • Major Methods & Practicum (minimum 60 hours clinical work; REP elements include professional goal setting, studying learner context, collecting objective data on progress, and professional reflection.
    • Student Teaching – 14 week placement.  (Depending on the endorsement, may be divided across elementary and secondary levels--9 weeks at one level, 5 weeks at the second level).  Requires a full Reflective Educator Project, including systematic data collection for 4+ lessons and a formal research presentation.
    • If you are adding:
      • Special Education Endorsement – 9 weeks for major & 10 weeks SPED; full REP for major.
      • Reading Endorsement – 9 weeks in major & 5 weeks in Internship; full REP for major.

Candidates Completing a Teaching Major and Teaching Minor

  • Teaching Major: requires Major Methods & Practicum (minimum 150 hours clinical work for K-8; minimum 60 hours clinical work for 5-12 & K-12).  REP elements include professional goal setting, studying learner context, collecting objective data on progress, and professional reflection.
  • Teaching Minor: requires Minor Methods (no additional clinical work is required)
  • Student Teaching: 14 week placement (9 weeks in major & the equivalent of 5 weeks in minor if possible). Requires a full Reflective Educator Project, including systematic data collection for 4+ lessons and a formal research presentation.

Candidates Completing a Double Major

  • First Major: requires Major Methods & Practicum (minimum 150 hours clinical work for K-8; minimum 60 hours clinical work for 5-12 & K-12). REP elements include professional goal setting, studying learner context, collecting objective data on progress, and professional reflection.
  • Second Major: requires Major Methods & 1 credit of Practicum (minimum 60 hours clinical work); attend first practicum class meeting, meet Clinical Supervisor (FS), set up 2 observations with FS.
  • Student Teaching: 14 week placement – 9 weeks & 5 weeks.  Requires a full Reflective Educator Project, including systematic data collection for 4+ lessons and a formal research presentation.

Candidates Completing a Double Degree (Same as Above)

  • First Major: requires Major Methods & Practicum (minimum 60 hours for 5-12 and K-12 and minimum of 150 hours for K-8). REP elements include professional goal setting, studying learner context, collecting objective data on progress, and professional reflection.
  • Second Major: requires Major Methods & 1 credit of Practicum (minimum 60 hours clinical work); attend first practicum class meeting, meet Clinical Supervisor (FS), set up 2 observations with FS.
  • Student Teaching: 14 week placement – 9 weeks & 5 weeks.  Requires a full Reflective Educator Project, including systematic data collection for 4+ lessons and a formal research presentation.
