About the MSU Foundation

The Foundation's purpose is to support and enhance the programs of Montana's land grant university by: seeking gifts, grants, bequests and other forms of financial support; and managing the assets of the corporation in accordance with its purpose and fiduciary responsibilities.

The mission of the MSU Foundation is to enhance the continuing excellence of Montana State University by attracting financial support and being prudent stewards of its resources and friendships.

The Foundation's support is not intended to replace the obligation of the state of Montana to provide the basic needs of the university's programs, but to enhance the quality and scope of the programs — to provide the margin of excellence.

The Montana State University Foundation was established in 1946 by the State of Montana as a not-for-profit corporation for the purpose of promoting the best interests of MSU. The Internal Revenue Service recognizes the Foundation as a tax-exempt public organization under Section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

The Foundation's Board of Directors consists of a minimum of 20 elected members, of which at least half must be MSU alumni.
