American Honda Promotes Science Literacy Through Archaeology

Imagine a world where people understand and appreciate their own history and culture as well as the histories and cultures of others.   With support from the American Honda Foundation, Montana State University’s Project Archaeology is introducing archaeology into schools as a way to help students understand today’s world and to help them shape a better world for tomorrow.

American Honda supports charitable efforts nationally and funds programs that focus on youth, education and science including the United Way and Little League Baseball®.  Recognizing that America’s future depends on the bright young minds of a generation that is innovative and unboundedly imaginative, the American Honda Foundation strives to provide a better foundation for science literacy for young people of all historical and ethnic origins.  Relationships between MSU and industry leaders like the American Honda Corporation greatly benefit the university, the corporation, and most importantly, the students who participate in Project Archaeology.  Through its support, Honda is fostering innovation and creativity, as well as building character and enriching communities across America.
Project Archaeology is a comprehensive archaeology and heritage education program dedicated to promoting science literacy and cultural understanding through high quality curricular materials and professional development for educators.  In the United States, people of color, especially African Americans, Native Americans, and Hispanic Americans, are increasing in population, but are still significantly underrepresented in science careers.  Archaeology holds great promise for engaging minority students in the scientific enterprise:

The application of scientific inquiry to historical, archaeological contexts offers these students opportunities to connect to science in relevant and meaningful ways.  This “connection” will lead to a more positive disposition towards both science and learning, and ultimately translate into increased science literacy.  Project Archaeology can help underserved audiences discover their own past while at the same time using scientific inquiry and supporting science disciplines to ask questions, formulate hypotheses, and gather, analyze and interpret data.

Dr. Michael Brody, Associate Professor of Science & Environmental Education, says, “We deeply appreciate the help we received from the American Honda Foundation and from our other sponsors. It allows Project Archaeology to expand our program to new areas and to new and diverse students.  Through the generosity of the American Honda Foundation and other corporate donors, Project Archaeology will continue to help underserved audiences connect with science education and with their own history.”
