The Bud Lilly Chair in Trout & Salmonid Bibliography will enable Montana State University ("Trout U") to preserve and advance its distinctive combination of teaching, research, creativity, and service as it relates to the trout and its habitat by:
bullet Building endowment to provide substantial, secure funding for a member of the library faculty who will focus on trout & salmonid information resources and activities.
bullet Developing the world's preeminent research collection of titles devoted to trout and other salmonids.
bullet Enhancing the support of critical MSU undergraduate and graduate programs in fish and fisheries management and trout related-field research.
bullet Strengthening "trout awareness" by providing resources and traditional and non-traditional educational outreach activities.
bullet Investing in the knowledge infrastructure to support research and education to preserve and improve trout environments.
bullet To secure into the 21st century and beyond those distinctive features of intellectual seriousness, artistic vibrancy, and social engagement that have defined Montana State University as the state's land grant university since its founding in 1893.
 
Endowment use:
It is expected that the Endowment for the Chair in Trout & Salmonid
Bibliography will annually support the following activities/functions:
bullet Salary & benefits for 1 FTE faculty member (the Trout & Salmonid Bibliographer [$1.7 million endowment produces $85K/yr]
bullet Provide at least $15,000 income per year for collection purchases [$300K endowment]
bullet Provide at least $10,000 income per year for travel-related expenses (this would include travel to conferences as well as buying trips to develop the collection) [$200K endowment]
bullet Provide at least $5,000 income per year for discretionary support and expenses (e.g., student assistants, equipment, software, miscellaneous supplies). [$100K endowment]
bullet Provide $10K per year in support/sponsorship of speakers and/or events related to trout (will cover honoraria and travel-related expenses for 4 speakers/yr); venue could be at MSU, but not necessarily. [$200K endowment]
 
TOTAL ENDOWMENT TARGET = $3.0 million
