How to Play an Active Role in Seminars
Read your lecture notes and any reading you have been given to do such as references from the lecturer or seminar tutor.
- Jot down any points you are not sure of or questions you would like to put to the other members of the seminar group or tutor.
- Don't be afraid to asking questions if you don't understand something - the seminar tutor is there to clear up any points from the lecture you are not sure of.
- Encourage your fellow students to get involved - show enthusiasm!
- Preparing for seminars will help you get much more out of them - so even if you are not doing a paper it is wise to prepare!
Group work
- If you do group work be an active member - employers highly value someone who can work as part of a team.
- Avoid the feeling of competition - the point of group work is to co-operate.
- Group dynamics - working as a groups will bring better results.
- Don't leave all the work up to the other members of the group - this will make you unpopular and you won't learn nearly as much as you would playing an active role.
- If the group is task driven and every member has a part to play it will make for better results.
- Rotate the leadership - if someone is better on one topic than another make them the leader - also rotate the spokesperson - give everyone a go at putting the group's results to the rest of the seminar.
- Don't be afraid of putting suggestions to the seminar tutor as to how seminars should be conducted - they will welcome suggestions - it's a joint venture!
