First Year Initiative - Services We Offer
College Student Inventory (CSI)
Our advisors meet individually with students during the first two months of school to review CSI results. This inventory, which students taken during orientation, is designed especially for first year students and helps them understand personal strengths, campus resources, and possible obstacles they may encounter during their first year.
D and F Meeting
FYI has an established early alert system that allows faculty to identify students that are in danger of receiving a D or an F in a course. Our advisors meet with these students to discuss options and help students get back on track.
Mid-Year Retention Advising (MRI)
An MRI meeting is designed for students that are on academic probation (receiving below a 2.00 GPA) after their first semester at MSU. FYI advisors work with students to create a plan of success based on their class load, work schedules, learning styles, and individual strengths and weaknesses.
Academic Workshops
FYI hosts a wide variety of workshops designed to develop the skills and strategies necessary for college success. Workshops are presented in one-on-one or group settings and can be customized to address individual needs.
Cat Crew
Cat Crew is a program which connects first-year students to upper-class mentors, clubs, and organizations. Making the social transition to college can be intimidating, but Cat Crew can help!
