First Year Initiative Workshops
FYI offers its workshops in the classroom, within a small group, in a residence hall setting or on an individual basis. Our office is happy to create a customized workshop or facilitate one of our pre-existing workshops. Please contact our office at (406) 994-7359 to talk about what type of workshop is best for you!
College Expectations. Our FYI advisors work with first-year students to help them understand the differences between high school and college. This workshop covers resources, advice, and answers any questions that a first-year student may have. FYI advisors will cover both academic and social expectations as well as talk about advice from last year’s first-year class.
What Students Should Bring: Their questions and experiences!
When should I schedule this workshop? This is a good workshop for the first month of school.
How to More Efficiently Read a Textbook. This workshop helps students easily identify what information should be focused on while reading a textbook. This workshop also addresses how to review information, self-quiz, and how to work with other students to more thoroughly understand the presented information.
What Students Should Bring: Students shouldbring a currently used textbook to the workshop. This makes it easier for our advisors to make the meeting more applicable to a student’s current academic challenges and work with the textbook’s format.
When should I schedule this workshop?: This workshop can be scheduled at any point in the semester.
How to Take Better Notes. First year students tend to copy everything the instructor says or does not take notes whatsoever. This workshop aids students in understanding how to take better notes and recognizing what is important to write down, all while retaining the information presented in class.
What Students Should Bring: Students are encouraged to bring their notes from this semester. One area that our advisor(s) will stress is the importance of reviewing. This concept is best illustrated by an activity which requires students to review their own notes.
When should I schedule this workshop?: This workshop can be scheduled at any point in the semester.
Time Management. This very interactive workshop will ask students to look at their current schedule and how they are allocating their time. The FYI advisor(s) will address how to make the most of the time that the student currently has by utilizing different times and environments for work, study, and play.
What Students Should Bring: Students should bring a planner if they use one.
When should I schedule this workshop?: This workshop works well in the beginning to middle of the semester to help a student create a routine. Three weeks prior to finals is the latest advisable time to provide this workshop.
Test Anxiety/How to Take Tests More Effectively. This workshop walks the student through the testing process, starting from several weeks out, to the day of, to during the test, and the recommended process for assessing his or her performance afterwards. Our advisors will also provide students with some strategies for combating test anxiety.
What Students Should Bring: Nothing is required.
When should I schedule this workshop?: This workshop can be scheduled at any point in the semester, although the demand is higher prior to midterms and final exams.
