INTRODUCTION

Welcome to Montana State University.  This resource guide has been developed through a partnership between the Dean of Students Office and the Parent/Family Association.  These offices serve parents and students in a very complimentary manner.  The following guide outlines resources and services available to students and parents at Montana State University.

The Dean of Students Office and the First Year Initiative (FYI) program assist new students in their transition from high school to Montana State University.  FYI offers students study skills, time management, test taking, and stress management workshops, as well as assistance and advice during their first year of college.  MSU also has a parent program that serves as an all-encompassing resource and referral entity for parents and family members as they help their students make the transition to MSU.  The program is committed to forming partnerships and providing resources for parents and families of MSU students. Participation in the parent program allows parents to stay involved in their students’ lives, while at the same time allowing the students to fully immerse themselves in the campus environment and develop independence at MSU.

The Parent/Family Association (PFA) is a large network consisting of the families of students enrolled at Montana State University.  Membership is free and automatic and the privileges are significant.  The goals and priorities of the PFA are determined by the all-parent board and are reevaluated on a regular basis.  Last year the PFA, along with FYI, was instrumental in developing the Parent and Family web destination, and this year, the Board created a monthly e-newsletter which includes timely information on everything from scholastic deadlines to activities happening in the Gallatin Valley.  The PFA is responsible for hosting the annual Parent/Family Weekend, coordinating the annual Parent Fund Drive and communicating with families regarding various policy changes, etc.  The association provides a direct line of communication between university administration and families and also is a terrific means for connecting families with one another.  Parents are encouraged to get involved with this dynamic organization at any time during their students tenure at MSU.  The Office of Communications and Public Affairs coordinates the PFA activities for the board.  Contact Jodie DeLay at 406.994.2502 or jdelay@montana.edu or visit www.montana.edu/pfa for more information.

Both the Dean of Students / FYI program and the Parent/Family Association are here to help students become engaged in the community of scholars at the university.  Student engagement and success are top priorities at Montana State University.
