Here is a step-by-step guide to the application process that will get you to your educational and career goals.

Step 1: Complete an Application for Admission

Get admitted to Gallatin College. You can fill out the application online here, or if you would like a paper application call 994-5536 to request one and we’ll send it to you.

Hint: If you have already been accepted to Montana State University, you do not need to re-apply, please fill out an intent to register form from the MSU Office of the Registrar. If you are currently enrolled at MSU, you can fill out a change of enrollment form.

Note: Please be aware that some Gallatin College programs fill quickly and although admission can be approved, it does not guarantee immediate placement in the desired program. We encourage you to apply early for the best chance of immediate placement.

Step 2: Apply for Financial Aid

All students are encouraged to apply for financial aid. It is recommended that students apply for financial aid early as possible to be considered for the widest range of financial aid. You can apply anytime, however Gallatin College's priority deadline for filing the FAFSA is March 1 (for the following fall semester). Most Gallatin College MSU students rely entirely or partially on financial aid assistance. All Gallatin College MSU programs are eligible for financial aid.

Step 3: Orientation, Advising and Registration


All new and transfer students (unless you are a current MSU student) must attend a Gallatin College orientation session before they can register for classes. Gallatin College offers several orientation sessions before each semester begins (August, January, and May). The next upcoming orientation dates are in June. Please call 406-994-5536 to sign up for your preferred orientation session.

Academic Advising

During orientation you will meet with an academic advisors who can help you design a program that meets your needs. That way you’ll know which classes to take, which order to take them in, and when you’ll graduate.

Advisors can help you:

  • Figure out the best program to meet your needs
  • Help connect you with other campus resources and programs to support your success
  • Register for classes

Registering for Classes

You will initially register for classes at orientation. To register, go to MyInfo and select enter secure area. You will need to log in (directions are on the web page). Once logged in, go to the student services tab, and then select registration. Under registration click on the add/drop classes link and find the courses you are planning to register for. Note: you will need an advisor code to register, which you will receive at orientation.

To place you in the appropriated classes, you may need to take a math placement test (MPLEX) or a Writing Placement test. Both of these tests are free and are only used for placement purposes. You will register for any needed tests at orientation.
