GX Instructor Trainees

Employment Description:

Employment in the Group Exercise (GX) unit at the Marga Hosaeus Fitness Center on Montana State University’s campus is offered to members of the Bozeman community and to current students, faculty and staff of Montana State University inclusive of every age, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, religion, physical ability, socioeconomic status, veteran status, experience level, and academic discipline.

This posting seeks interested student candidates for the Group Exercise Instructor Trainee program. This year-long program trains individuals with no teaching experience to instruct GX formats including Rhythm Ride, Boot Camp and Cross Fire. Selected candidates will begin by learning the cycling format Rhythm Ride during Fall semester and then move on to strength formats such as Boot Camp and Cross Fire for Spring semester. The time commitment can range from three to six hours per week with significant energy investment required.

GX Instructor Responsibilities and Duties:

Develop public speaking, facilitation, communication and leadership skills. Develop the three C’s of instruction and group management: Connection, Communication, and Coaching. Gain and maintain the fitness, form and feedback integration required for effective leading and teaching. Learn how to create group workouts and energizing playlists that utilize safe and effective movements through all class activities.

  • Attend twice-weekly trainee sessions.
  • Lead and participate in practice teaching sessions.
  • Participate and evaluate GX classes outside trainee sessions.
  • Provide feedback to fellow trainees on their teaching to advance their instruction skills.
  • Imitate, then emulate, then create energizing and challenging workouts/playlists.
  • Participate in formal audition at the end of the Fall semester.
  • Mentor in strength formats Spring Semester.
  • Complete continuing education sequence Spring semester for instructor graduation.
  • Attend Fitness Programs retreats and GX instructor trainings.

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in at least 25+ indoor cycling classes or successful completion of at least one semester of ACT 165-Power Cycling (completion can be pending Spring 2020).
  • Current MSU student.
  • Current CPR/AED/First Aid certification or ability to attain within 60 days of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience participating in at least 50+ indoor cycling classes or completion of at least two semesters of ACT 165-Power Cycling (completion can be pending Spring 2020).

Certified Yoga Instructor

This posting seeks qualified yoga instructors. GX Yoga Flow is a 50-minute, all-level format. Instructors are expected to teach the class with appropriate music. The Hosaeus Fitness Center provides all yoga props, mats, blankets, etc. This particular posting seeks a power-oriented instructor for Thursdays and Fridays at 12:10pm.

GX Instructor Responsibilities and Duties:   

Develop and lead group workouts that utilize safe and effective movements through all class activities. Group exercise classes and instructors contribute to the health and fitness goals of students, faculty, staff and guests to continually motivate and empower individuals of all fitness and skill levels. Instructors are expected to maintain a high level of commitment by preparedness, attendance and minimal subbing.

  • Teach GX classes at a high level of preparation and effectiveness.
  • Assist in set-up and clean-up of GX classes.
  • Learn and utilize participant names frequently.
  • Maintain format appropriate certifications, trainings and skills.
  • Maintain/attain at least one nationally accredited instructor/trainer certification.
  • Maintain time sheet accurately and submit monthly WTE and time summaries.
  • Assist in mentoring and development of GX Instructor Trainees/Mentees.
  • Maintain consistent and timely communication with unit coordinator.
  • Promote positive communication channels with Fitness Assistants.

Required Qualifications:

  • Current accredited yoga certification.
  • Current CPR/AED/First Aid certification or ability to attain within 60 days of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience teaching at least 100 classes.
  • 200+ hours RYT.

Pay:

  • $18/hour with no experience.
  • $20+/hour with experience.
