Planning a GPS Mapping Project

College Office

Before you Start

Just like with any project, thoughtful planning of your GPS mapping project will save you time and money, and will help you avoid common problems that can make your data unusable.

If you haven't had any training in GPS mapping, this is the place to start. Embarking on a mapping project without training is a recipe for disaster. In order to create a well-organized and usable database, you need training. It's not so much about pushing buttons - anyone can do that - it's about understanding how to plan your project appropriately, collect data efficiently, achieve the required accuracy, and understand and deal correctly with coordinate systems and datums. Proper training will help to ensure that you meet your goals without making mistakes and compromising accuracy.
