The Graduate School - Policies and Procedures

Credit Requirements

It is the student's responsibility to enroll for the number of credits needed to satisfy all department, college, and university criteria.  The following list is to be used only as a guide; other credit restrictions may apply.

  • Graduate Teaching or Research Assistants (GTAs/GRAs) GTA or GRA stipends require enrollment of at least six (6) credits each semester during the academic year.
  • Graduate Student Assistants (GSAs) may be enrolled in three to five (3-5) credits each semester.  If a student is continuing from spring semester, they may be enrolled in zero to five (0-5) credits during the summer semester.
  • Social Security & FICA tax exemption requires a minimum of six (6) credits for the semester of employment.
  • Graduating students must be registered for a minimum of three (3) credits during the semester of graduation.
  • Students sitting for qualifying/comprehensive exams or defense must be registered for a minimum of three (3) credits during the semester of the exam.
  • Office of International Programs requires registration of nine (9) credits per semester for international students. Contact the Office of International Programs for policies about registration for fewer than nine (9) credits.
