The Graduate Student Research Rendezvous is a research and creativity celebration taking place on October 19, 2017. It is an opportunity for graduate students to present research or scholarly work, receive feedback, and compete for prizes. Research or scholarly work presented can be part of a thesis/dissertation or can be other work that is part of a graduate program.

The format for the Rendezvous is both a poster session and a Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) competition.  The poster session is from 12:30-2:30 pm. Each student will stand with their poster during the session to engage with attendees and to answer questions from the judges.

The 3MT® Competition takes place from 3:30-5:00 pm. Students may use only one slide and have three minutes to present their research to a non-specialist audience.

The Graduate Student Research Rendezvous is a great opportunity for you to grow professionally. By participating in the Rendezvous, you will have a chance to present your research or scholarly work in a familiar environment – your MSU community. It’s a supportive atmosphere to practice presentation skills in preparation for conferences, thesis/dissertation defenses, job interviews, and more.

First place in each of the poster categories will receive a $250 travel grant towards conference participation and second place will receive $100 for scholarly expenses. The Judges’ Choice and the Peoples’ Choice winners for the Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) Competition will each receive $175  for conference participation or scholarly expenses.

Finally, the Research Rendezvous is a chance to learn about graduate research taking place across campus and to network with other graduate students.

You may present any research or scholarly work (at any stage of completion) that is part of your graduate program. Graduate students from all departments are encouraged to participate.

The challenge will be figuring out a way to summarize your work visually. Judging is based on content and appearance of your visual presentation, clarity of the oral presentation, and your ability to respond to the judges' questions.

Each presenter will be provided a 6 feet [H] x 4 feet [W] display board, which will include thumbtacks for hanging posters and materials (e.g., videos, photos, paintings, art works, and so forth). Presenters are responsible for providing any additional equipment (e.g., electrical cords, easels, etc.) and making sure it is not a safety hazard.

Judges will identify themselves and engage with you for a few minutes before critiquing. They will assign a numerical value to various criteria regarding the content and appearance of the display, clarity of the oral presentation, and your ability to respond to questions. The judges are aware that the research presented may be in various stages of completion.

3MT® requires graduate students to condense their research into a three-minute presentation using language appropriate to an intelligent, yet non-specialist, audience.
