Departments' Minimum Admission Requirements

In the table below, the following definitions apply:
  • GPA is based on a 4.0 scale of undergraduate or graduate work; it is not applicable to international students.
  • The GRE is required of all students. Subject tests are required for applicants to the Geology Option in Earth Sciences, Physics ( U.S. applicants), and Applied Psychology (if Psychology was not the applicant's undergraduate discipline). Applicants to Professional Accountancy program may submit the GMAT in lieu of the GRE.
  • An English Proficiency Exam (TOEFL and IELTS are accepted) is required of all international applicants unless English is the first official language of the student's country of citizenship or the student has received a degree from an institution in the U.S. (cb stands for computer based and pb stands for paper based. Most of the scores below are paper based. Please contact the department you are applying to if you have any questions. )
  • If the department to which you are applying does not have specific criteria for your essay, please state why the graduate degree you seek represents a reasonable step or progression for you in terms of your previous academic study and professional experience. Describe your career goals and aspirations, and how you expect the completion of the graduate degree to facilitate attainment of those goals.
  • Departmental deadlines vary, and in some cases departments ask you to complete a preliminary application in order to ascertain the suitability of the program for you. Remember, before your graduate application can be reviewed for admission, all of the accompanying documents (a completed application, 3 reference letters, official transcripts, financial certificate, GPA calculation, GRE scores, application fee etc. ) must be submitted to the department to which you are applying prior to their application deadline. In addition to the departmental requirements, please use the application checklist and the application requirements and deadlines section of the catalog to ensure you have completed the application process. The Division of Graduate Education encourages students to apply and pay online at www.applyweb.com/apply/mtstug/menu.html.
