- What’s in a Name?: Making Sense of
Sustainability
Museum of the Rockies Hager Auditorium, 7pm
Sustainability is a word that means many things to many people - so many, in fact, that it is tempting to say that the word has lost any meaning. Tempting, perhaps, but not true. In this public lecture, Rob Abbott will take us on a journey from the origins of the word, through its current use (or mis-use) and suggest where and how our future will be shaped by sustainability. Drawing on his experience with government agencies; non-government organizations; academic institutions; and businesses around the world, Rob's remarks will help us all make sense of a name and a concept that touches all of our lives.

Rob Abbott - Sustainability as Innovation: Engineering and the Future of Society
Roberts Hall 101, 3pm
Sustainability, that most vexing of words, is sometimes thought of as either "nice to have, when other more pressing concerns have been met”, or as a domain that is limited to environmental consciousness. And therein lies both the challenge and the opportunity for society: to reframe sustainability as shorthand for innovation that can grow bottom lines while shrinking environmental footprints; that can solve real-world environmental concerns while protecting the economy; that can make businesses more efficient, not less, thereby improving our quality of life. Engineers have a pivotal role to play in this reframing process - as architects of both technical and process innovation. In this lively seminar, Rob Abbott will highlight ways in which engineering can and should be viewed as the "glue" connecting our present to the future. (see above for information about Mr. Abbott.) |
