Influenza

You most likely have influenza ("flu")

Because you have reached this Web page, your self-test indicates that you most likely have influenza. Influenza is caused by a virus, and is different from, and potentially more severe than, a "common cold". Typical symptoms of flu include fever, shaking chills, cough, and major weakness and fatigue. For more information about influenza, visit http://www.cdc.gov/flu/.

Antibiotics will not improve the symptoms or shorten the course of influenza. There are some anti-influenza medicines that, in certain situations, can help shorten the duration of influenza. These anti-influenza medications:

  • Work best if taken within 72 hours of the beginning of flu symptoms
  • Will not improve the symptoms of flu
  • May shorten the duration of flu symptoms by one day
  • Cost $70 to $75
  • Require a prescription

If you have had your symptoms for less than 72 hours and want to take an anti-influenza medication, please come to the MSU Student Health Service. Hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm and Saturday, 8:00-11:30am. You will also want to look at this Web site for suggestions on how to treat your symptoms.

If you have had your symptoms for more than 72 hours, anti-viral medications are not likely to help, but you will want to look at this Web site for suggestions on how to treat your symptoms.

Complications of the flu can be serious, including pneumonia, ear infections, sinus infections, dehydration, and worsening of chronic medical conditions, such as congestive heart failure, asthma, or diabetes. Come to the MSU Student Health Service if you have the flu and develop any of these symptoms:

  • Worsening cough with a lot of phlegm
  • Shortness of breath
  • A fever over 101º F that is difficult to reduce with ibuprofen or acetaminophen
  • Earache
  • Sinus pain
