Health Promotion

The Health Promotion Program coordinates a variety of campus prevention and wellness programs to enhance the health of the campus community. Health Promotion offers paid positions for student leadership and research opportunities in campus and community health enhancement. For more information contact Health Promotion at 994-5497. Programs include the following:

Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) Prevention Program - Programs and activities include promotion of an online alcohol self-screening tool and training of student health clinic staff to screen students for substance use and make appropriate referrals. Other activities include substance use information dissemination through both traditional (pamphlets/brochures/posters) and non-traditional means (internet) and participation in campus/community coalition to review alcohol policy issues. Bobcat Survivor – is a 5-on-5 co-ed multi-challenge alternative event held during spring semester.  Students form a team and compete in over 15 exciting events (ex. tri-cycle races, egg toss, guitar hero, dodgeball, swim events…and much more!) to win BIG prizes! There will be FREE food, music, and t-shirts for participants.  All are welcome to come and observe the survivor madness as well!  This year’s Bobcat survivor is Friday, March 2008 in the Shroyer Gym.  Sign up begins March 1st at the ASK-US desk. Health Research Internships - The Health Promotions department provides opportunities for students to participate in hands-on research and volunteerism for credit in a wide range of campus and community placements. 994-5497

The Insight Program - An alcohol, drug and tobacco abuse early intervention program. The Insight program offers confidential substance and alcohol abuse counseling as well counseling for smoking cessation. For more information call Rick Winking at 994-7764 or email to insight@montana.edu.

Midnight Mania - Midnight Mania is an annual student event sponsored by MSU Office of Health Promotion, Insight, and Dean of Students Office.  Besides a being a well-attended and fun event, Midnight Mania strategically occurs during a typically high-risk weekend on campuses nationwide (Homecoming).  Promoted heavily among freshman and residence life, Midnight Mania is held on the Friday night of Homecoming and intended to provide a fun and safe alternative to students under 21.

Each year, this event draws well over 2,000 students.  The evening typically consists of events such as a 4 on 4 Coed Volleyball tournaments, sumo wrestling, dunk tank, climbing wall, free food and much more.  Organizations throughout campus and the community donate their time and resources to help give MSU students an opportunity to enjoy a safe non-alcohol event.  Call 994-5497 for more information.

Queer Straight Alliance-MSU - is MSU-Bozeman's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender student and community group. QSA-MSU exists to provide a safe space, social events, educational opportunities, and a support network for queer people at MSU and in the Bozeman area. Meetings are held weekly in the SUB during the academic year. (Contact QSA-MSU at 994-4551 or visit our web page).

Sexual Health Education Program - Programs and activities include STD/week information dissemination in dorms and Greek houses, ongoing condom distribution, participation in World AIDS Day activities in December and sexual health resource tables throughout the year. (994-5497)

The Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC) - SHAC is the governing body of the MSU Student Health Service (SHS). SHAC is composed of student and faculty members striving to provide quality health care and insurance at an affordable price to the students of MSU. SHAC's mission is to make the SHS a convenient, reputable, and effective health center. If you have any questions about the SHS or would like to join SHAC please email shac@montana.edu.

Students Against Sexual Assault (SASA) - This student run organization provides peer education and outreach for the campus concerning sexual assault and relationship violence. (For more information on how to become a V.O.I.C.E. center volunteer contact the VOICE center's web site or call Christian Sarver at 994-7142).

Victim Options In the Campus Environment (the VOICE Center) - The VOICE Center provides free and confidential support, advocacy, and referrals to survivors of sexual assault, relationship violence, and stalking. Located in 14 Hamilton Hall, the VOICE Center has advocates available twenty four hours a day during regular academic semesters. Contact the 24 hour line at 994-7069.
