PAP Smears are screening tests for cancer of the cervix, most commonly done at the time of the annual women’s health exam. Current recommendations are for women to have PAP smears beginning 3 years after first sexual intercourse or by age 21. PAP smears are generally recommended yearly until at least age thirty. Frequency after age thirty depends on your situation and PAP smear history. Infection with certain strains of the Human Papilloma virus can increase your risk of cervix cancer and increase your risk of an abnormal PAP smear. PAP smears and women’s annual health exams can be scheduled at the Student Health Center by calling 994-2311. Appointments can also be made to discuss and follow up on prior abnormal PAP smears.
