Excessive sun exposure

Symptoms
-
Sunburn ( ranging from slightly reddened skin
to painful blistered skin)
-
Thirst
-
Headache
-
Nausea
-
Prevention
-
Wear sun screen with SPF of 15 or greater
on all skin exposed to sun, including feet and ears. Apply 30 min before
sun exposure and reapply every 1-2 hours while in the sun.

Use waterproof sunscreen if swimming/water
sports (diving, snorkeling etc.) and reapply every 1-2 hours while in the
sun.

Wear lip balm with SPF of 15 or greater

Wear sun visor or cap or hat
-
Wear sunglasses
-
Stay out of the sun from 10 AM to 2 PM
-
Drink at least 8 oz of non-alcoholic, non-caffeine
beverage every hour while in the sun. (Both caffeine and alcohol are diuretics
and draw fluids from the body)

Wear light colored cotton long pants and long
sleeved shirts
-
Treatment
-
Avoid sun exposure
-
Apply cool, moist cloths to skin
-
Avoid taking hot showers and soaking
in hot tubs
-
Gently apply aloe or moisturizing lotion
-
Take Ibuprofen or another anti-inflammatory
medication with food
-
Seek medical attention if skin is blistered.

Prevention

Follow all the preventive measures listed
for sunburn

Be vigilant about drinking at least 8 oz of
non-alcoholic, non- caffeine fluids every hour

Treatment
-
Increase fluids (i.e. Gatorade) to 16-32 oz
every hour, until your urine is clear
-
Discontinue all alcoholic and caffeinated
beverages
-
Avoid sun exposure
-
Rest
-
Seek medical attention if symptoms persist
