investigation of supervised practice/dietetics programs

Types of supervised practice/dietetics internship programs and the application process are discussed in HDFN 400 seminar, which is taken during the fall semester of your senior year.

  • During your junior year, start thinking about where you might apply to allow time to investigate and determine what programs best fir your interests and abilities.
  • Please note that some supervised practice/dietetic internship programs require you to take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE).  You may schedule a GRE exam at Testing Services located at Reid 243 by calling 994-6984.  There is a fee involved for this exam.
  • Visit the student web site at www.eatright.org for a listing of programs or check out a copy of the Guide for Supervised Practice/Dietetic Internship Programs from 201 Romney Gym.
  • Currently there are no supervised practice/dietetic internship programs in Montana .

preparation of the application packet

Only seniors and graduates of a DPD may apply to supervised practice programs.

  • There are two application deadlines each year – in February and September. Students graduating in summer or fall may apply for the September date while those graduating in spring may apply for the February deadline while you are still a senior.
  • The Guide for Supervised Practice/Dietetic Internship and Graduate School programs is available in a binder in Romney Gym 201 and may be checked out to dietetic students. A complete listing of names and addresses of CADE accredited or approved Supervised Practice/Dietetic Internship programs is available at www.eatright.org .
  • Once you have selected the program(s) you would like to apply to, you must contact the program director to receive a current application. Failure to do so may prevent you from applying for a particular program. Some applications can be downloaded from the Internet.
  • The American Dietetic Association has a standard application form that is used by most of the supervised practice programs. The form is available in two versions:  1998 or 2004.  You will need to check with each supervised practice program to find out which form is required.  A copy of each form is available.  You may download this form in Word or PDF Format.

When completing required.

  • If you are requesting a letter from MSU Dietetic Faculty, you will need to complete the ‘Request for a Letter Recommendation' form and a ‘Summary' form and present them at the time you are asking for a letter. A copy of these forms is included in the appendix of the student handbook.

You will also need to attain a Verification Statement from the DPD Program Director.

  • When applying for a supervised practice program a Verification Statement is submitted by the individual as part of the complete application packet. The Verification Statement form signifies that all of the classes and requirements of the didactic program in dietetics have been successfully met and the student is eligible to apply for a supervised practice/dietetics internship program.
  • Please see a copy of the Verification Statement procedure in the appendix of the student handbook for more information. Verification Statements received from individuals or Program Directors outside of a packet of application materials will not be retained or processed.
  • If you are a senior applying for supervised practice/dietetic internship programs a Declaration of Intent to Complete Degree should be requested from the Program Director. This form is used in lieu of the Verification Statement until you graduate. After graduation you will be given a Verification Statement.

You will need to prioritize your choices of supervised practice/dietetics internship programs for computer matching and send in a form to the D and D Digital Systems by the required deadline.

  • An overview of Computer Matching for Supervised Program/Dietetics Internships is outlined in the appendix.
  • The deadline for a Spring Match occurs in February and for a Fall Match in September.

A complete packet of Application materials is sent to each Supervised Practice/Dietetics Internship program that you have selected on the Computer Matching form and needs to be postmarked by the deadline specified by each program.  There is generally a program application fee that will need to be included with each packet.

Notification of Appointment to a Supervised Practice/Dietetics Internship

Once the matching process has been completed, you will be notified on a specific day at the D & D Digital Systems web site regarding the outcome of your appointment to a Supervised Practice/Dietetics Internship Program.

  • Applicants who were not matched (appointed) in the first round of applications are then given the opportunity to contact Supervised Practice/Dietetics Internship programs with unmatched openings. The list of unmatched openings is posted at the D & D Digital Systems web site and an unmatched applicant may contact these programs directly regarding those openings after the established appointment date.

Applicants who were selected and receive a match are not eligible to apply for an alternative choice in the second round of applications for unmatched openings in Supervised Practice/Dietetics Internship programs.
