Addiction Counseling Certificate Program

Montana Licensure Information | Is Distance Learning Right for Me?

This program provides required course work credits toward the Montana Licensed Addiction Counselor credential.

This program is an academic preparation program that prepares students to become LAC-eligible in Montana. Significantly, this is a graduate certificate program, not a master's degree program. Students must have a bachelor's degree in a relevant field to apply. That said, many come to the addictions counseling field with a variety of academic background and experience.

Students must earn 12 credits of addiction-specific course work in order to earn the addiction counseling graduate certificate from MSU. State licensure requirements differ and students will be advised to take additional MSU course work to meet these requirements. The MSU addiction counseling certificate provides individual academic advisement and tailors students' programs of study based on individual student academic backgrounds.

Those with a master's degree from a CACREP-accredited or equivalent counseling program may have met some addiction-specific course work. Those with a bachelor's degree will need additional addiction course work. Please read the educational requirements. If, after reading this link, you are still unsure if your background is right for this program, check out our program requirements section. Please contact Katey Franklin, program director, with any questions.

  • Courses are limited to 20 students per session
  • Courses are completely online and run though MSU's Extended University.
  • Courses are $400 per credit.
  • If you have questions about the program requirements and advising, please contact Katey Franklin.
  • To apply, be sure you have the latest version of Adobe Reader and download the application to your computer. When completed, e-mail the form to Lisa Brown or fax applications to 406.994.7856.
