Potential students must submit the following application to the Montana Licensed Addiction Counselor Program. This application is for a complete audit of potential students' transcripts and course work and to see what is needed for LAC certification.

Program Requirements for Master's Degree in Counseling

If you have a master's degree in counseling from a CACREP-accredited or equivalent program, you will most likely have met all of the general education course work requirements and many of the specific course work requirements for the LAC credential.*

Specific course work requirements:

  • Addiction Assessment (60 hours/4 credits)
  • Addiction Counseling (90 hours/6 credits)
  • Pharmacology (30 hours/2 credits)
  • Ethics for Addiction Counselors (15 hours/1 credit)
  • Alcohol and Drug Studies (30 hours/2 credits)
  • Addition, Treatment, Planning and Documentation (30 hours/2 credits)
  • Multicultural Competency (15 hours/1 credit)
CACREP or equivalent content that may be applied toward specific course work requirements for LAC credentialing:
  • Addiction Assessment: Conceptualization and Diagnosis of Mental Disorders (DSM); meets up to 45 hours
  • Addiction Counseling: Counseling Practicum, Counseling Internship; meets up to 45 hours
  • Alcohol and Drug Studies: Graduate level alcohol and drug studies course; meets 30-45 hours
  • Addiction Treatment, Planning, and Documentation: Appraisal/testing course; meets up to 15 hours
The following courses supplement course work taken in CACREP-accredited or equivalent counseling programs to meet LAC course work requirments.
  • Addiction Assessment (15 hours) offered as part of LAC 503: Assessment, Treatment, Planning, and Ethics of Addiction
  • Addiction Counseling (45 hours) offered as LAC 501: Chemical Dependency Counseling
  • Pharmacology (45 hours) offered as LAC 502: Psychopharmacology and Addictions
  • Ethics for Addiction Counselors (15 hours) offered as part of LAC 503: Assessment, Treatment, Planning, and Ethics of Addiction
  • Addiction Treatment, Planning, and Documentation (15 hours) offered as part of LAC 503: Assessment, Treatment, Planning, and Ethics of Addiction

*Please note that in addition to course work requirements, 1000 supervised clinical hours are required before applicants may apply to sit for the licensing exam.
