Program Leader for: Family and Consumer Sciences Teaching Option

Family and Consumer Sciences Teaching Option

Family and Consumer Sciences Teaching Option is an option under the major in Family and Consumer Sciences in the Department of Health and Human Development.

Education

Students completing the program in Family and Consumer Sciences Education/Extension are qualified to apply for Family and Consumer Sciences teaching certificates (grades 5-12) in Montana.   While salaries vary considerably across school districts many schools in Montana are now offering salaries beginning in the low to md-$30,000s with a nine month contract and excellent benefit packages.  Montana teaching certificates are often honored in other states as well.

Extension

Students interested in pursuing a career with the Montana Extension Service will find themselves well-qualified to be hired as a county extension agent with a starting salary of around $33,000.   It should be noted that many states require a masters degree to be hired into the extension service.  Students finishing their undergraduate degree at MSU will be well-positioned to attend graduate school furthering their education in either specialty areas in Family and Consumer Sciences or in education.

Private Firms and Public Agencies

Students can also find employment opportunities in the public and private sectors.  For example, students may find employment with government agencies such as the Department of Insurance or the Department of Health and Human Services who are looking for knowledgeable employees who are also excellent instructors.  Private firms such as Graingrowers, Egg Board, Northwest Energy, are often in the market for college graduates who are trained educators and who also have a background in Family and Consumer Sciences.

Mission Work

Yet another exciting opportunity for students is to consider employment with the Peace Corps or missionary work.  These types of organizations are usually anxious to hire persons with broad Family and Consumer Sciences background and a teaching certificate is an added bonus.
