Insight
The Insight program is a three level alcohol\drug intervention process open to all MSU students either by self-referral or by referral from MSU offices or staff.
LEVEL I – FOCUS SEMINAR
The Focus Seminar is a one-time attendance educational process group run by student facilitators and designed to be interactive and informational. During the four hours of contact, evidenced based educational components are employed to help participants minimize risk associated with use. At the close of the seminar participants are offered information about support groups, therapy groups, and individual counseling. The cost of the group is free for self-referrals and $75 for mandatory referrals.
LEVEL II – BASICS
BASICS is an acronym for brief alcohol screening and intervention for college students. BASICS is an evidence based version of motivational interviewing designed to increase motivation to change use of alcohol and other drugs. The four hour intervention includes the following:
- Completion of written alcohol\drug assessments
- A one hour data gathering interview followed by a one hour personalized feedback interview with a trained professional
- A personalized feedback sheet including information on blood alcohol concentration, social norms and risk factors associated with alcohol and other drug use.
Level II also has no fee for self-referral, but there is a charge of $100 dollars for students required to complete BASICS.
LEVEL III – INTERVENTION
AND REFERRAL
Most students experiencing problems with alcohol and other drugs are identified in the above two levels. However, some individual situations require ongoing observation and assessment as well as possible inpatient or outpatient treatment. Since MSU does not have on-campus alcohol/drug treatment services, students in Level III are referred to outside providers for further assistance.
INDIVIDUAL ASSISTANCE
Montana State University employs a full-time licensed counselor who specializes in chemical dependency. If students have paid the health service fee, they can make an appointment at no additional charge.
