THE INTERNATIONAL STREET FOOD BAZAAR is an exciting intercultural
gathering that
has a 26 year history on the MSU campus. International students are the
stars of this springtime event as they create booths to represent their home
countries and prepare traditional foods to sell in a street market
atmosphere. Music and a variety of entertainment complete the festivities that is attended by
approximately 3,000 people from MSU and the Bozeman community.
A complex set of factors have led to the cancellation of
the 2008 International Street Food Bazaar, originally set for February 23.
“Planning for the February event normally begins in August, but was delayed this year until information about the final details of the SUB renovation project became available,” said Deborah Chiolero of MSU’s Office of International Programs and coordinator for the event.
Chiolero explained that while SUB managers and staff were willing to work with OIP to allow the event to be held, there was, by then, insufficient time to adequately prepare for the event in which food is served to thousands of bazaar goers.
“Cancelling the bazaar this year is not something that we have done lightly, but in the interest of hosting a high quality event, it was what we had to do,” Debra De Bode, Director of International Student & Scholar Services, said. “We want to thank everyone for their interest in and support of the bazaar.”
De Bode said plans are already under way for the next bazaar, to be held Feb. 21, 2009, “where everyone can enjoy a revitalized event in the beautifully remodeled SUB.”
The International Street Food Bazaar allows MSU’s international students and scholars to share their cultures with the campus and community with a sampling of typical dishes. Approximately 25 countries are represented in the annual event, which began in 1981.
