Program Overview
 The Norwegian city of Bergen is surrounded by seven mountains and boasts nearly 1000 years experience in welcoming people from abroad. Bergen hosts the International Music Festival- the largest cultural event in Norway. Professional ballet ensembles and some of the best choirs in the country come to Bergen for the festival. The university has an enthusiastic jazz scene, a thriving music life, and a drummer-boy's brigade. With its 17,800 students and more than 2,500 staff, the University of Bergen is an urban university, with much of its campus close to the city center of Bergen. The university, colleges, theatre, concert-halls, museums and a series of art galleries make Bergen the center of culture for western Norway. There is always plenty to see and do in the city, making it popular with tourists at all times of the year.
Academic Program
Although the main language of instruction at the University of Bergen is Norwegian, many courses are also taught in English. For a list of classes offered in English, visit the following website http://prospective.uib.no/courses. Exchange students are also encouraged to learn some Norwegian. Additionally, the university arranges a 2-week Introductory Course free of charge for all international students before the beginning of the semester. This course includes basic information about the University and departments as well as lectures, excursions, basic language instruction, and practical information. The seven main departments at the University of Bergen are Arts, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Law, Psychology, Medicine and Dentistry.
Language of Instruction
Most courses are taught in Norwegian, however many are taught in English as well. Norwegian language courses are offered to exchange students.
Eligibility
Students who have completed one full academic year of university level work at MSU with a 3.0 GPA by the time they begin studies at the University of Bergen are eligible.
Academic Credit
Credit will be awarded at MSU for all courses taken and passed at the University of Bergen. The student's academic advisor at MSU and the MSU Registrar, in consultation with the Office of International Programs, will determine how these credits will apply to degree course requirements. Successful study at the University of Bergen satisfies MSU's Multicultural/Global core curriculum requirement. Students are urged to work closely with these offices prior to departure to plan a course of studies which will maintain steady progress toward their degree.
Location
Norway, a Scandinavian country, is located to the west of Sweden, in the Northeast corner of Europe. Situated on the mountainous western coast of Norway, Bergen is set in a natural marine harbor between steep, forested mountains and the waters of the Puddefjorde. Bergen is a favorable destination as it serves as a gateway for visits to the beautiful Norwegian fjords. Spectacular views and long summer days make fjord country irresistible for travelers to Bergen. The city of Bergen is unique in terms of its location, history, culture, and infrastructure. The university buildings are intricately woven into the geographical, historical, and cultural framework of the city. With a compact downtown, most attractions can be reached on foot. Bergen also hosts a number of annual international festivals in music, arts, and film including the Bergen International Festival.
Cost and Included Benefits
Students receiving exchange placements at the University of Bergen will pay tuition at MSU in the same amount as if studying in Bozeman. Each student is responsible for his/her room and board at the University of Bergen, as well as trans-Atlantic travel expenses. Financial Aid
Financial aid may be available for study abroad at the University of Bergen. Additional costs for study at the University of Bergen (e.g. travel to and from the study site) may be used in calculating student's financial aid package. Students are responsible to apply to the Office of Financial Aid.
Application
Applications are available in the Office of International Programs at 400 Culbertson Hall.
Deadline
Applications are due in the Office of International Programs on October 1 for the following spring semester and March 1 for the following fall semester and academic year.
