Years Abroad: Spring 2008

Comments: "I studied abroad in Marseille, France during the Spring 2008. I
learned so much from being there. Maybe not necessarily academically, but I learned life skills and people skills that no one can learn in a classroom. Marseille was filled with two drastically different cultures: the proud French culture and the strong Arabic culture present from all the immigrants from North Africa. I would walk down the street and pass a boulangerie one minute and an authentic ,arabic speaking, couscous restaurant the next! At my school, 20% of the students were internationals, while the other 80% were French. Because of this I got to make French friends, as well as friends from all over the world! I was exposed to so many different cultures and ways of thinking; I came back with a whole new view of the world. Especially my view of countries that may not be portrayed positively in the media has changed for the better. I also got to travel a lot while abroad. Greece, England, Ireland, Scotland, Italy, Monaco (yes, it is a separate country), Germany, and even a road trip to Spain, still while exploring France and Marseille. I stayed in a 17th century chateau (it was a friends 'summer home'!), went to a friends birth day party in Germany where no one spoke English, and was taken to authentic pubs by Irish friends in Galway. Studying abroad is an experience I would never give up, worth the debt and getting behind a year in school, and I would recommend it to anyone. Hands down the most fulfilling experience of my life thus far!!!! Oh and if you go to Italy, don't let anyone talk you out of Naples. It was my favorite place in Italy, by far the most authentic! I went alone and it was awesome...and I can suggest the best hostel ever if you need a recommendation!!!"
