Earning Credit
MSU students can get full credit and maintain regular progress toward their degrees while studying abroad. Full academic credit for work successfully completed on MSU-sponsored programs is guaranteed. In addition, study on an MSU- sponsored or an MSU-approved study abroad program satisfies MSU's multicultural/global core curriculum requirement. However, careful planning is essential to ensure that you receive the most academic credit for your studies abroad. All students wanting to receive credit for study abroad should begin by meeting with their academic advisor and MSU's Study Abroad Advisor. Note that many departments have departmental study abroad advisors who also can be extremely helpful. All students must complete the Preliminary Study Schedule and obtain the required signatures prior to their departure for study abroad.
Financial Aid
Study Abroad Financial Aid Web Site
Financial aid scholarships and loans will apply to all MSU-sponsored study abroad programs. MSU tuition-waiver scholarships do not apply to fee-based programs such as CCIS or ISEP Direct. Study abroad students already receiving financial aid can apply for additional aid by filling out a Study Abroad Budget form and the Financial Aid Agreement form.
Non-MSU Programs
Hundreds if not thousands of study abroad programs are offered by other U.S. colleges and universities as well as other recognized organizations. In addition, many institutions abroad will consider direct applications from U.S. students to enroll on a non-degree basis. MSU students may receive academic credit toward their degrees for studies completed on many of these programs. However, such credit is not assured, and students must make arrangements prior to departure in order to be sure that credit will be given. While financial aid is generally applicable for these programs, as long as MSU agrees to accept credit for them, these arrangements require careful attention. Costs vary considerably among these programs. Information about many such programs is available in the International Opportunities Resource Center.
