Program Overview

Academic Program
Letra Hispánica is a school of Spanish language and cultures, and a center for advanced philological studies. The teaching philosophy is based on the old motto, "enseñar deleitando" (to teach so that learning is enjoyable"). It is hoped that each student will acquire a theoretical knowledge in the classroom as well as knowledge based on experience in the real world. The courses offered center mostly around Spanish culture, literature, and language. Included in the program are workshops, cultural trips, seminars, conferences, and other activities to enhance the learning experience.

Language of Instruction
All courses are taught extensively in Spanish by native Spanish professors with university degrees, Master's, PhD's, and years of experience teaching foreign students.

Eligibility
Programs are offered for both beginning level and third year Spanish majors. Students who have completed 3 semesters of college level Spanish (MLS 219) and have a 3.0 GPA or above by the time they begin studies at Letra Hispánica are eligible for placement. For students in the advanced program who have not completed at least 3 semesters of college level Spanish, exceptions are made in special cases only for admission.

Academic Credit
Credit will be awarded at MSU for all courses taken and passed at Letra Hispánica. The student's advisor at MSU, in consultation with the Office of International Programs, will determine how these credits will apply to degree course requirements. However, successful study at Letra Hispánica satisfies MSU's Multicultural/Global core curriculum requirement. Students are urged to work closely with their advisor and the office prior to departure to plan a course of studies which will maintain steady progress toward their degree.

Location
Letra Hispánica is located in the well-known "calle Libreros" in the center of Salamanca near the famous site of the Old University of Salamanca, and surrounded by monuments of great beauty and historical value. Salamanca has a population of 170,000, and is located about 125 miles from Madrid and 65 miles from Portugal. It has three universities with more than 40,000 students. Students have a great cultural offer in libraries, theaters, cinemas, and art exhibitions, and opportunities for leisure in the bars, cafes, pubs, discotheques, restaurants, gyms, and other sporting events.

Cost and Included Benefits
Students who receive exchange placements at Letra Hispánica will pay a special program fee which varies according to the length of stay. This includes classes, all activities outside of class, excursions, and lodging (three meals per day.) You can expect other expenses such as: air fare and transportation to and from Salamanca, health insurance, books, and personal expenses. Remember also to plan for any internal travel expenditures, as well as unexpected changes in the exchange rate.

Financial Aid
Financial aid is available for study abroad at Letra Hispánica. Additional costs for study at Letra Hispánica (e.g. travel to and from the study site) may be used in calculating the student's financial aid package. Students are responsible to apply to the Office of Financial Aid.
