Program Overview
Kansai-Gaidai is a private, non-profit institution established in 1945 in Hirakata, Osaka Prefecture. It offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees as well as an Asian Studies program specifically designed for international students. Kansai-Gaidai currently enrolls around 13,500 students and has international partnerships with 236 institutions in 40 different countries. Located mid-way between Osaka and Kyoto, Kansai Gaidai's campus is in the commercial and cultural heart of Japan.
Academic Program
Kansai Gaidai offers courses in English, Spanish, Japanese, International Languages and Communication, Linguistics, Asian Studies, Studio Arts, Humanities, Business and Economics. The Asian Studies program is designed specifically for international students. The program annually welcomes about 400 competitively selected students from more than 30 countries/regions. Since its inception, the program has enrolled in excess of 6,000 students. In the Asian Studies program, students take Japanese courses in the morning and Social Sciences, Humanities, Business/Economics, and Studio Art courses in the afternoon. The program provides students from all over the world with an opportunity to study and obtain firsthand knowledge of the culture and language of Japan. Efficient language instruction through the latest innovations, fully equipped laboratories, a wide variety of course offerings on Japan and Asia, unique Studio Art courses, experienced and qualified faculty members, along with various friendship programs, have all contributed to the rapid development of students' personal and intellectual growth.
Language of Instruction
All levels of Japanese; some courses in English are offered. Students are strongly encouraged to take the Japanese Language class offered at MSU before applying to Kansai-Gaidai. Two years of college-level Japanese (or equivalent) are required to take classes at Kansai-Gaidai University.
Eligibility
Students who have completed one full academic year of university level work at MSU with a 3.0 GPA by the time they begin studies in Kansai-Gaidai are eligible.
Academic Credit
Credit will be awarded at MSU for all courses taken and passed at Kansai-Gaidai. The student's academic advisor at MSU, in consultation with the Office of International Programs will determine how these credits will apply to degree course requirements. However, successful study at Kandai-Gaidai satisfies MSU's Multicultural/Global core curriculum requirement. Students are urged to work closely with the their advisor and the Office of International Programs prior to departure to plan a course of studies which will maintain steady progress toward their degree.
Location
The two campuses of Kansai Gaidai (Katahoko and Hotani) are located in Hirakata City (pop.: 405,000) in Osaka prefecture, the second largest business metropolis next to Tokyo. Hirakata is located on the border with Kyoto and Nara, both of which are now irreplaceable synonym of "Japan's rich tradition. Geographic advantages provide easy access to the centers of Osaka and Kyoto by train within an hour.
Cost and Included Benefits
Students receiving exchange placements at Kansai-Gaidai University will pay tuition at MSU in the same amount as if studying in Bozeman. Students who are not awarded an exchange placement at Kansai-Gaidai will need to pay the "study abroad" fee to attend Kansai-Gaidai. (Visit the International Opportunities Resource Center for more information about this fee.) Each student is responsible for his/her room and board in Japan, as well as trans-Pacific travel expenses. Several scholarships are available for students planning to study in Japan. Remember to plan for extra expenses such as internal travel and personal spending money as well as for unexpected changes in the exchange rate.
Financial Aid
Financial aid may be available for study abroad at Kansai-Gaidai University. Additional costs for study at Kasai-Gaidai (e.g. travel to and from the study site) may be used in calculating student's financial aid package. Students are responsible to apply to the Office of Financial Aid.
Application
Applications are available in the Office of International Programs at 400 Culbertson Hall.
Deadline
Applications are due in the Office of International Programs on March 1 to study in Kansai-Gaidai the following fall.
