Program Overview

The Norweigan University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is Norway's second largest university with about 20,000 students. Established in 1996, NTNU replaced the University of Trondheim, which included the Norwegian Institute of Technology, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Museum of Natural History and Archeology. NTNU is a thriving center for science and technology research and specializes in energy and environmental research.  The university is located in Trondheim, which is known as Norway's technological capitol and number one student city.  There are a number of international students on campus and students are encouraged to study at NTNU from throughout the world.

Academic Program

NTNU offers programs in Architecture and Fine Art, Engineering, Mathematics, Medicine, Social and Natural Sciences and Technology, with many courses taught in English.  For more information on courses, please visit the NTNU homepage: http://www.ntnu.no/portal/page/portal/eksternwebEN/

Eligibility
Students who have completed one full academic year of university level work at MSU with a GPA of 3.0 by the time they begin studies at NTNU are eligible.

Academic Credit
Credit will be awarded at MSU for all courses taken and passed at NTNU. The student's academic advisor at MSU and the MSU Registrar, in consultation with the Office of International Programs, will determine how these credits will apply to degree course requirements. Students are urged to work closely with these offices prior to departure to plan a course of studies that will maintain steady progress toward their degree.

Location
NTNU is located in Trondheim, a city of 150,000 located on the western coast of Norway.  Originally founded in 997, Trondheim is the original capitol of Norway and is still where kings receive their ceremonial blessing today.  Situated by the Trondheimsfjord, it is surrounded by forested hills, with the River Nidelva winding through the city.

One out of every six inhabitants is a student, making this a vibrant, student oriented city with concerts, theatre, dances, and other events.  Event highlights include the International Student Festival, the largest in Norway, and the UKA, a week-long student festival with music, theatre, and community events. NTNU also boasts the largest sports association.  Trondheim's coastal location next to the Gulf Stream current makes for a relatively mild climate throughout the year.

Norway is one of the Scandinavian countries in the far north of Europe. Norwegian is the official language, but most visiting students find it easy to communicate in English. It is a long, narrow and varied country with its natural beauty always close at hand. Along the entire coastline there are magnificent fjords carved out and left by the huge, heavy masses of ice, which slowly receded some 14,000 year ago. The further north you go the more impressive the scenery becomes.

Traveling to other European countries from Trondheim is easy and affordable. Flights leave to Oslo hourly and from there, Stockholm and Copenhagen are less than an hour away by plane, and London and Paris are both two hours away. The excellent public transportation system (trams, underground, buses, ferries, and trains) makes it easy to experience the city and its surrounding areas, including nearby islands for swimming in the summer and ski areas for winter activities. The forested hills provide additional opportunities for hiking, skiing, and biking.

Cost and Included Benefits
Students receiving exchange placements at the NTNU will pay tuition at MSU in the same amount as if studying in Bozeman. Each student is responsible for his/her room and board at the NTNU, as well as trans-Atlantic travel expenses. Remember to plan for extra expenses such as internal travel and personal spending money as well as for unexpected changes in the exchange rate. Several scholarships are available for students planning to study abroad.

Financial Aid
Financial Aid may be used for study abroad at NTNU. Additional costs for study at NTNU (e.g. travel to and from the study site) may be used in calculating student's financial aid package. Students are responsible to apply to the Office of Financial Aid.

Application
Applications are available in the Office of International Programs at 400 Culbertson Hall.

Deadline
Applications are due in the Office of International Programs on October 1 for the following spring semester and March 1 for the following fall semester and academic year.
