Wollongong is Australia's ninth largest city, 50 miles South of Sydney. The local area, the Illawarra region, is one of great natural beauty, as illustrated by the aboriginal name "Illawarra", which means "where the mountains meet the sea." The main Wollongong campus is situated on the forested lower slopes of Mt. Keira.
Within walking distance of the campus you will find some of Australia's finest swimming and surfing beaches. Nearby National Parks, the South Coast and Southern Highlands regions provide spectacular scenery and many leisure activities. The Botanic gardens are just next to the campus.
Wollongong City is a large commercial, retail and industrial center. The facilities and local attractions include a modern pedestrian shopping mall, the Performing Arts Center, and a major regional art museum. Nearby are bush walks, historic villages and a variety of sporting facilities. The high level of ethnic diversity of Wollongong's population and the presence of many international students ensures a wide range of food choices in the city's restaurants and fast food outlets.
