Comments: "My time in Spain was the most exhilarating, exciting,
challenging, and eye-opening experience of my life. Though at first,
the realization of being alone in a foreign country is like jumping off
the high-dive, knowing you can't turn around, everything turned out
more than great. Of course, I can elaborate on all the incredible food
I ate, places I saw, and random bus stations I've been to. But, my
greatest times there are highlighted by the times with the all the
people I came to know, in situations I could never have been prepared
for, which helped me come to know myself in a way like never before.
This is the true merit of a study abroad experience, which I would
recommend to any student out there with even the slightest itch for
adventure and self-exploration.

As for students looking for any recommendations when studying abroad,
here is what I would also strongly suggest:

1) You are a student studying abroad to see and take in another
culture. The only way for that to truly happen is to get out of your
comfort zone, away from friends and other Americans, and seek out the
locals who have similar interests as you, or do things that you do at
home. For instance, I found two local choirs in my city in Spain, with
which I toured around the country near Christmas-time performing
Mozart's Requiem Mass and traditional Holiday Carols. It was through
this extension of myself that I made the greatest friends, and have the
fondest memories of.

2) Although you may have big plans for other international travel in
the future, don't assume that you'll have the time to do it again. By
that I mean to get out of your city and check out your country and the
region that it's in. You're pretty much only there once, so you might
as well take advantage of your time there.

3)Learn about current events, America's position in the world, and
develop opinions on internationals issues. You're an international
student, representing MSU and the United States, so you should probably
have the knowledge and views to support yourself."

Comments: "I was convinced by my girlfriend to study abroad. She mentioned College would be the only time in my life where I would have this opportunity. That information passed through my ears quickly as I thought I would have all the time in the world to travel. But, looking back this was the only time in my life where as a student I could travel and study abroad. I lived with a amazing host family which I
would highly recommend to anyone who is studying abroad. The culture really comes to life when you are living with the citizens of the country. My only advice is what my girlfriend told me, "study abroad now, you may never have the time to later!"

Favorite Memory:  "My favorite memory of my experience was visiting Granada.  There is an overlook of the Alhambra with the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the background.  The high afternoon sun was glaring off the mountains.  Then there were the gypsies who were selling beautiful handmade crafts, fresh strawberries on a stick and singing with a guitar.  It was amazing!  I could not take my eyes off the spectacular view!  After that some friends and I ate Paella and Gelato and sat below the Alhambra in a little square just taking in the scenery.  I do not think that there is anything more educational than experiencing for ones self.  Studying abroad is definitely that type of experience.  I would have gone a year if I could have.  There are so many connections to make with the locals and even other people studying abroad.  It keeps ones mind open to many different aspects of culture.  It is just an amazing time."
