Program Overview
With roots going back to 1866, the University of Stellenbosch is one of the oldest universities in South Africa. A century-long tradition of quality teaching and research has ensured the University of Stellenbosch a place among the finest academic institutions in Africa. The university has a student population of about 22,000 students and offers a wide variety of courses.
Academic Program
The university's 150 academic departments are housed in 11 faculties, including: arts (humanities and social sciences), education, agricultural and forestry sciences, military science, dentistry, engineering, economic and management sciences, science, medicine, law, and theology.
Language of Instruction
Most courses are taught in the native language of Afrikaans (a language closely related to Dutch and Flemish). Students who do not have a good working knowledge of Afrikaans may find it difficult to follow the lectures. However, students are at liberty to write their assignments, tests, and examinations in English. There are courses taught in English which are specifically for international students. Courses offered in English include: English Lit., Public Policy and Management Science, Political Science, Religious Studies, and Theatre Arts.
Eligibility
Students who have completed a full academic year of university level work with a 3.0 GPA by the time they begin studies at Stellenbosch are eligible.
Academic Credit
Credit will be awarded at MSU for all courses taken and passed at Stellenbosch. The student's academic advisor at MSU, in consultation with the Office of International Programs and the registrar's office, will determine how these credits will apply to degree course requirements. Successful study at Stellenbosch satisfies MSU's Multicultural/Global core curriculum requirement. Students are urged to work closely with their advisor and the office prior to departure to plan a course of studies which will maintain steady progress toward their degree.
Location
Stellenbosch is a university town with a population of about 60,000—excluding students. Founded in 1679 by Simon van der Stel, the town of Stellenbosch is located about 32 miles from Cape Town.
Stellenbosch is on the banks of a river in the premiere wine producing Jonkershoek Valley, and is encircled by majestic mountains. There is easy access to nearby fruit farms, mountain ranges, and neighboring rustic towns. For swimming, surfing, and other water sports, superb beaches can be reached in half an hour's travel.
Music, theatre, and the arts thrive in Stellenbosch, a very active cultural center. Small art galleries are all over town. During the summer, concertgoers picnic in the gardens surrounding the local amphitheatre while listening to a variety of musical performances.
Every year, Stellenbosch holds a number of different festivals and street fairs, including the annual Food and Wine Festival, the Book Fair, the Arts Festival, and a film festival. There are numerous sports facilities for events such as cricket, rugby, golf, cross-country, cycling, and mountain biking. There are also a great number of restaurants, bistros, and pubs serving excellent and innovative dining.
Cost and Included Benefits
Students receiving placement at Stellenbosch will pay tuition at MSU in the same amount as if studying in Bozeman. Each student should plan for additional expenses, such as travel related costs (e.g. airline tickets). Remember to plan for extra expenses including travel and purchase of souvenirs as well as for unexpected changes in the exchange rate.
Financial Aid
Financial aid can be used for study abroad at Stellenbosch. Additional costs for study at Stellenbosch (e.g. travel to and from the study site) may be used in calculating student's financial aid package. Students are responsible to apply to the Office of Financial Aid.

Deadline
Applications are due in the Office of International Programs on March 1 to study the following fall and October 1 to study the following spring.
