Academic Program

This program is housed at the University of Stellenbosch, our sister university in South Africa.  The political and economic history, social and environmental landscape of South Africa are in a state of change.  Participants will have the unique opportunity to learn about these changes at one of South Africa's oldest universities.  The four-week program offers a variety of options to create your own schedule and choose your areas of interest.

The academic program consists of lectures, group discussions and field trips, and is taught by Stellenbosch University faculty, and other South African experts.  The lectures cover a variety of topics, including History, Politics, Economics, Future Studies, Art, Literature, Geo- and Bio Diversity and Sociology. Students attend three courses in the four weeks.  Courses include:

  • Introduction to South African History, Politics and Economics
Gives an overview of South African History focusing on the Apartheid years and the transition to democracy.  Examines the recently evolved political and economic systems and the manner in which our colonial legacy and apartheid past still influence the present systems. The concept of future studies is introduced against the background of our particular economic, political, social and cultural factors. Students receive either Political Science OR History credits, depending on their essay topic.

  • Bio- and Geo Diversity in the Western Cape & South Africa
Students are introduced to and explore various Geological sites, as well as the indigenous flora found in the Western Cape called Fynbos.  The course also discusses South Africa 's enormous mineral wealth that has been influential in shaping the social and political environment in the country for the past 150 years.
    OR
Apartheid and After: Representations of South Africa in Art and Literature
Focuses on the way in which art and literature in South Africa registered and reflected the social and political conflicts and tensions of the apartheid years.  Looks at the art produced in the ten years of democracy, focusing on the role documentary photography played; and discusses post-apartheid literature through the genres of poetry, novels, drama, and selected texts.

  • Social, Legal and Cultural Landscapes
Focuses on the theoretical background of reconciliation and the reconciliation challenges facing South Africa in the post-apartheid era, as well as those faced in post-conflict societies, elsewhere in Africa.  Includes various field trips to introduce students to the different Western Cape cultures, as well as a volunteer day with Habitat for Humanity.

Extended Tour:
There is an optional garden route tour available to program participants at the end of the program.  This is a 1 week long tour along the South African “Garden Route”. Cost: $755. Includes transportation, dinner, bed and breakfast, and bungee jumping. (This option is well worth it - students in the past have thoroughly enjoyed it!)

Financial Aid
The full cost, including airfare, may be used in calculating financial aid. Students considering financial aid should contact the Financial Aid Office immediately.  You can download and print the Summer Programs Financial Aid Information Sheet (14KB) in Acrobat (PDF) format.  Visit the MSU Financial Aid Office website at: www.montana.edu/wwwfa
