Years Abroad:  Fall 2006

Name of Program/University:  Yeditepe Universitesi - Istanbul, Turkey

Major:  Architecture

Favorite Memories:  "My favorite memory (out of many) would have to be taking the train with two friends as a last-minute decision from Istanbul to Denizli, to see the pools of Pamukkale, and the ruins of Heirapolis and Afrodisias.  The sheer chaos of trying to navigate the system, still "newbies" to Turkey, and the language was exhilarating - meeting people on the fifteen miles-per-hour sleeper train, getting invited to breakfast at a complete stranger's house, and not having any idea of where we were staying or what we were doing.  Like always, everything came together fine, and being in these normally touristy areas during the "off season" of mid-October allowed us the opportunity to explore the ruins with virtually no other people around!  While it was a whirlwind, three-day trip, I got my first taste of Turkey, outside the immense city of Istanbul.  The locals were so friendly and helpful, the scenery was breathtaking, and the food was as always, delicious.

Comments:  "For anyone thinking of studying abroad - it's so easy to cruise through school, and before you know it, you'll be graduating.  At what other point i your life will going to see another country, actually LIVING there, even for a short period of time, be so easy?  Most programs fit in seamlessly with your major, and if they don't, it usually just takes a little bit of persistance to talk to the right people and get the right papers signed, and you can get the study abroad experience you want."
