What to Bring with you to the United States

Clothing
Bozeman weather during the winter months is nearly always beautiful and certainly cold. In January the temperature ranges from a low of -18C to a high of 4C. The winter typically lasts for four months, and spring and summer snows are expected.

The key to dressing appropriately for Montana’s weather is to bring clothes that can be layered. A typical Montanan might dress for a January day in a short-sleeved T-shirt, covered by a long-sleeved button shirt, covered by a sweater, covered by a thick jacket, with scarf and hat that covers the ears, warm pants with thick socks and boots, and warm gloves or mittens. Layering clothing in this way allows you to adjust as the temperature changes. You will want a coat made of wool or some synthetic material that sheds snow and keeps warm when wet. A rain jacket or umbrella is also a very good idea. If finding good winter clothing is difficult for you, don't worry, all your needs can be taken care of in Bozeman.

At the university, dress is decidedly informal. Professors, for example, seldom wear jackets or neck ties, while students frequently wear sweat pants and t-shirts. Non-western wear is acceptable to wear at all times, traditional or cultural clothing and objects are a great way to introduce your culture to community members. You should also plan to bring at least one outfit to wear during more formal social events. It is important that you pack at least one pair of comfortable walking shoes.

Winter and Spring visitors to Montana are typically encouraged to bring the following items:

  • adequate supply of prescription medication (carry-on bag);
  • extra pair of prescription glasses (carry-on bag);
  • Winter boots and comfortable walking shoes;
  • a bathing suit;
  • multiple pairs of pants;
  • a warm sweater and jacket (wool or synthetic);
  • a warm hat, scarf and pair of gloves (wool or synthetic)
  • a rain jacket or umbrella;
  • warm bed clothes (Montana nights can be chilly);
  • exercise clothes (if you want to use the MSU gymnasium);
  • warm socks;
  • sunglasses;
  • dress clothes for presentations and parties; and
  • pictures and artifacts to share with the program staff and other participants.

Optionally, you may choose to pack a travel alarm or hair dryer.

Luggage
Pack lightly!  You will be responsible for carrying your own luggage, so plan to pack only what you can manage yourself. Generally, airlines permit travelers on international flights to and from the United States to check two suitcases each weighing no more than 34 kg.  For flights between cities within the United States, however, the per bag weight limit is 22.5 kg--over that amount and you will likely be charged $50 per overweight bag. It is recommended therefore that your luggage consist of two medium-sized suitcases (each weighing less than 22.5 kg). If you can manage with only one bag, you may also wish to pack a duffel bag or collapsible suitcase to take home purchased items. In addition to your checked baggage, airlines generally allow passengers to carry a small bag and one personal item (e.g. a purse or small back pack) aboard the plane. We strongly encourage you to carry with you a few days clothing and other essentials, such as prescribed medication, in case your bag is delayed in transit.

Dictionary
You will be provided with all required books and materials needed during the Institute. However, you might want to bring a translation dictionary to assist you with your use of English.

Electrical Appliances
The standard electrical system in the United States is alternating current, 60 cycles, 120 volts. If you bring electrical equipment (such as hairdryer, shaver, computer), be sure it is compatible or bring an adapter. (Adapters can be inexpensively purchased in the United States.) You might want to bring a battery-operated alarm clock.

Medicine

If you require any prescription medications, please bring these with you on the aircraft. If you are under doctor's care for any condition, you might want to bring a letter from your physician describing your condition and treatment regime in case you need to see a doctor while you are in the United States.

Toiletries
Although you will be able to purchase toiletries locally, you might not be able to find the brand you enjoy using. Therefore, you should bring an ample supply of toiletries, such as:

  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, floss and other dental hygiene items
  • Soap
  • Shampoo, conditioner, and other hair care items
  • Antiperspirant/deodorant
  • Razor and shaving cream (if appropriate)
  • Sun screen lotion

Valuables
Although the MSU campus and Bozeman are generally safe, neither the U.S. government nor the university can guarantee the safety of any valuables you might bring. Therefore, you should leave expensive and extravagant items at home.

Home Country Items

There will be many opportunities for you to share your culture with MSU campus and the Bozeman community. Past visitors have brought traditional clothing items, music and small traditional crafts and foods to share with the Bozeman community and also with other group members.
