What to Bring with you to the United States
Clothing
Bozeman weather in October is sunny but cool, sometimes cold. Expect temperatures to vary greatly throughout the course of the day. In October daytime temperatures range from a low of 0 to a high of 16 Celsius. Night time temperatures are colder, between -10 and 5 Celsius. Snow is possible.

The key to dressing appropriately for this weather is to bring clothing that can be layered. A typical Montanan might dress for an October day in a long-sleeved shirt, covered by a sweater and a coat. Layering clothing in this way allows you to adjust as the temperature changes. You will definatley want a coat for the evenings.

At the university, dress is very informal. Professors, for example, seldom wear jackets or neck ties, while students frequently wear jeans and casual shirts.  Non-western wear is acceptable to wear at all times.

Visitors to Montana in the fall are typically encouraged to bring the following items:

  • adequate supply of prescription medication (in your carry-on bag);
  • extra pair of prescription glasses (carry-on bag);
  • tennis shoes or other comfortable walking shoes (VERY IMPORTANT);
  • bathing suit;
  • a warm sweater and coat;
  • gloves or mittens and a stocking cap;
  • warm bed clothes (Montana nights can be chilly);
  • exercise clothes (if you want to use the MSU gymnasium);
  • warm socks;
  • sunglasses; and
  • dress clothes for presentations and parties.

Dictionary
You will be provided with all required books and materials needed during the institute. However, you might want to bring a translation dictionary to assist you with your use of English.

Electrical Appliances
The standard electrical system in the United States is alternating current, 60 cycles, 120 volts. If you bring electrical equipment (such as a shaver or computer), be sure it is compatible or bring an adapter. (Adapters can be inexpesively purchased in the United States.)

Lodging

You will be staying in the MSU Guest Suites

The guest apartments are located on the Montana State University campus and are within walking distance to several Bozeman attractions. The suites are fully furnished two and three bedroom apartments complete with all the necessary amenities to comfortably serve as your "home-away-from-home".

All units are conveniently furnished with sheets, towels, cookware, plates, utensils, toaster, coffee maker, microwave, alarm clock, iron and iron board, refrigerator, oven color TV, and local telephone service, etc. All suites are non-smoking units and pets are not allowed.

Luggage
Please pack lightly--no more than you can manage yourself. In addition to a single, regular suitcase, we encourage you to bring a small bag which you can use to carry items during field trips. You may also wish to bring a duffel bag or collapsible suitcase to take home purchased items. Generally, airlines permit travelers to and from North America to check two suitcases each weighing no more than 22.7 kg (check with your airline for exact limitations).  Weight allowances for international and domestic flights also differ, however.  This is important because you may be NOT be able to check suitcases weighing more than 22.7 kg at no charge when flying to the United States, but then have to pay a penalty for the same bag when returning home because your first flight will be on a domestic carrier. NOTE: There is also a new rule that on most airlines, the 2nd bag checked will cost money (you should doouble check with your airline to see if it applies to you).   In addition to your checked baggage, airlines generally permit one to carry a small bag and one personal item (e.g. a purse or small back pack) aboard the plane. We strongly encourage you to carry a few days clothing and other essentials, like medicines, with you in case your checked luggage is delayed in transit.

Medicine

If you require any prescription medications, please bring these with you on the airplane. If you are under doctor's care for any condition, you might want to bring a letter from your physician describing your condition and treatment regime in case you need to see a doctor while you are in the United States.

Toiletries
Although you will be able to purchase toiletries locally, you might not be able to find the brand you enjoy using. Therefore, you should bring an ample supply of toiletries, such as:

  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, floss and other dental hygiene items;
  • Antiperspirant/deodorant; and
  • Razor and shaving cream (if appropriate).

Soap, shampoo, and hair conditioner will be provided to your free of cost in the hotel.  PLEASE NOTE: New airline regulations in the United States prohibit ALL liquids in carry-on bags. Items like toothpaste and lotions, for example, are allowed in checked bags only, and then only in a see-through plastic bag.

Valuables
Although the MSU campus and Bozeman are generally safe, the university cannot guarantee the safety of any valuables you might bring. Therefore, you should leave expensive and extravagant items at home.
