Tip of the Month: Social Networking

Security Tip of the Month graphic

It is easy to feel safe and relaxed while updating your Facebook profile, commenting to your MySpace friends about your day or responding to somebody else‘s comments online. It is important to remember, however, that little you post online remains private. Some social networking sites will even post certain information from 3rd party sites that you would rather not share. Because of this it is extremely important to stay knowledgeable about the privacy policies instituted by any social networking sites you are a member of, and to regularly review your privacy settings.

However even with strict privacy settings you lose all control over any content that you post. As soon as it is typed anybody who can see it is free to replicate it in ways that you did not intend or share it with people that you did not intend to see it. So be thoughtful about all of your activities and never post content that you want to remain private.
