MSU8021X Manual Configuration: Vista

Follow the instructions below to manually configure Microsoft Vista OS to connect MSU8021X, MSU's secure wireless network.

IMPORTANT: If you are a new student and have not yet changed/set your MSU Windows Domain Account password or it has expired, please go to My Profile to set it before continuing.

  1. Click the Network menu icon icon located in the lower right corner of your screen (fig. 2).

  3. Click "Network and Sharing Center". (fig. 3).

  5. The "Network and Sharing Center" window opens (fig. 4).
  6. In the left sidebar click the "Manage wireless networks" link.

  8. The "Manage Wireless Networks" window opens (fig. 5).
  9. Click the "Add" button.

  11. The "Manually connect to a network" window opens (fig. 6).
  12. Click "Manually create a network profile".

  14. The "Enter information for the wireless..." window opens again (fig. 7).
  15. Enter MSU8021X as "Network name".
    Set WPA-Enterprise as "Security Type".
    Set TKP as "Encryption" type.
    Check "Start this connection automatically".
  16. Click the "Next" button.

  18. The "Successfully added MSU8021X" window opens (fig. 8).
  19. Click "Change connection settings".

  22. Make sure that only "Connect automatically when this network is in range" is checked.
  23. Click the "Security" tab.

  25. The "Security" panel opens (fig. 10)
  26. Set the authentication method to "Microsoft: Protected EAP (PEAP)".
    Check the "Cache user information..." box.
  27. Click the "Settings" button.

  30. Check the "Validate server certificate" box.
    Check "AddTrust External CA Root"
    Check "Enable Fast Reconnect"
    Uncheck all other boxes.
  31. Set authentication method to "Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2)".
    Click the "Configure" button.

  34. Uncheck the "Automatically use my Windows logon..." box.
  35. Click the "OK" button.

  37. Click the "OK" in the next 2 panels.
  38. Click on the "Additional information..." balloon on lower right of your screen (fig. 13).

  40. The "Enter Credentials" window opens (fig. 14).
  41. Enter your MSU Windows Domain Account user name and password.
  42. NOTE: Your MSU Windows Domain Account user name is generally in the form of first.last. It is also what you use to log in to computers in the IT Center student computer labs on campus.
  43. Click the "OK" button.

  53. You should now be connected to MSU8021X and see the window below (fig. 18).

  55. When successfully connected your network icon in the lower right of your screen will like this: Desktop icon showing connected status.
