Apple computer users at Montana State University,

On Tuesday, September 20th, Apple will release the following operating system updates: iOS 10 and macOS Sierra.

These updates are incompatible with a number of software applications. The most critical is the removal of the protocol used on campus to support Virtual Private Network (VPN) connections.

Due to this, and other software incompatibility issues detailed below, the Information Technology Center recommends that users do not upgrade to Apple iOS 10 or macOS Sierra at this time.

In the meantime, ITC will work to find alternative solutions to the VPN issue, and other software companies will have time to update their applications. ITC will be back in touch when safe alternatives are found.

  • Virtual Private Networks (VPN)
    • The upcoming OS updates to iOS 10 and macOS Sierra, will remove the ability to connect to any VPN that uses the Point-to-Point (PPTP) protocol.
