Alert - New Ransomware "WannaCry"

Good Afternoon MSU Service Providers,

As some of you may have noticed in the news, a widespread Ransomware attack has been taking place today. This particular Ransomware variant, WannaCry, has already negatively impacted large organizations in Europe, including universities, hospitals and telecom companies, and continues to spread rapidly with over 75,000 identified attacks.

WannaCry exploits a vulnerability in Windows. In March of this year, Microsoft released a patch that mitigates the risk posed by WannaCry. Any Windows computers that have not had all of their Windows updates applied are at severe risk (and this particular patch requires a reboot before being fully applied).

To best protect yourselves and those to whom you provide IT support, please continue to underscore the importance of installing updates ASAP and restarting computers at least once a week. Additionally, ensure that backup processes on any file servers for which you are responsible are working as designed, and that critical files do not solely exist on end user devices.

If you receive reports of ransomware on MSU devices, please contact the UIT Service Desk immediately (994-1777 or
