New Phishing Attacks

This week, many faculty and staff have been the recipients of another wave of phishing messages. University Information Technology (UIT) reminds the MSU community to be especially cautious opening and acting upon unexpected or non-standard-looking emails.

As with most phishing attempts, the goal is to trick the recipient into giving the attacker account information, including passwords.

VERY IMPORTANT:  If you, or somebody you know, followed a link in an email message from a questionable or unverified sender and entered account information, please call the UIT Service Desk at 406-994-1777 immediately.

UIT has processes and systems in place to filter out many such messages and reduce their impact. However, your continued diligence is required to help protect MSU from these ever-changing attacks.

Always Be Suspicious

Please remember to always be suspicious of emails if any of these criteria are met:

  • The sender is unknown
  • The email is not expected
  • Anything seems out of the ordinary, like format, grammar or reply-to address.

When in Doubt, Call Before You Click

Contact the UIT Service Desk at 406-994-1777 if you ever have questions about the legitimacy of an email. Send any message that you believe is a phishing attempt to phishing at montana.edu.

Thank you,
