About our department... In support of the Montana State University mission, the Information Technology Center (ITC) promotes, develops, delivers, and facilitates the use of information technology services and resources. The IT Center manages, operates, and supports Montana State University's multilevel, distributed computation and information systems, provisioning the central infrastructure and information systems for the four-campus enterprise. The IT Center delivers academic technology and user services for students, faculty, and staff on the Bozeman campus and provides technical leadership to distributed personnel throughout the campus. Duties and

About this position... The Computer Software Engineer/App I provides software engineering services for the MSU four campus enterprise. This position analyzes user needs in order to design, develop, test, and maintain general computer and internet-based applications software. The person in this position participates in software development and maintenance across multiple languages, operating systems, and applications. This position is also responsible for providing sub-system software management and analysis for EIS modules. The person in this position provides enterprise-wide technical and user EIS support by analyzing, troubleshooting, diagnosing, and resolving EIS problems.

1.   Experience/Education: A Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
2.   Knowledge: Knowledge of object-oriented programming and design principles; knowledge of Web Application Framework Development; knowledge of software development and maintenance best practices; knowledge of multiple operating systems; knowledge of basic principles of software engineering; and knowledge of modern programming environments and technologies and their applications.
3.   Skills: Skilled at Java and/or other object-oriented design language; skilled at task management and prioritization; skilled at proactive, team-oriented customer-service; and skilled at interpersonal communication with a wide variety of internal and external technical and non-technical staff.
1.   Experience/Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and/or a minimum one year of experience in software development.
2.   Knowledge: Knowledge of emerging trends in software development and maintenance; knowledge of relational database management practices and standards; knowledge of Oracle object creation and database programming techniques; knowledge of EIS database artifacts, job processing, and Web infrastructure; knowledge of EIS database; and knowledge of Ellucian Enterprise Resource Planning software (Banner).
3.   Skills: Skilled at independent researching and application of emerging technologies and innovations; skilled at database transaction processing development, preferably with Oracle or other relational database infrastructure; skilled at navigating Ellucian Banner technical infrastructure database; skilled at using SQL, HTML, XML, Javascript, Groovy and/or Grails; and skilled with Linux or Unix operating system commands.
The Successful
Candidate Will

The successful candidate will also have the following abilities: Ability to independently maintain technical currency with existing server operating systems and tools; ability to effectively communicate with users of varying technical proficiency; ability to work well both independently and in a group; ability to prioritize issues and tasks relative to system impact; ability to follow through on and report progress; ability to collaborate with team members, staff, and customers; ability to provide excellent customer service skills; ability to analyze, diagnose, and resolve complex problems with EIS; ability to read, understand, and follow high-level policies and guidelines and apply those guidelines to daily responsibilities; and the ability to communicate IT practices to a wide range of constituents.

1.   In accordance with MSU policy, hiring will be conditional upon successful completion of a pre-employment background check.
2.   Must be able to use a computer monitor, keyboard and mouse for long periods of time.
3.   This position requires periodic on-call availability and after hours support.
