Overview

About our department... In support of the Montana State University mission, the Information Technology Center promotes, develops, delivers, and facilitates the use of information technology services and resources. The IT Center manages, operates, and supports Montana State University's multilevel, distributed computation and information systems, provisioning the central infrastructure and information systems for the four-campus enterprise. The IT Center delivers academic technology and user services for students, faculty, and staff on the Bozeman campus and provides technical leadership to distributed personnel throughout the campus. Duties and
Responsibilities

About this position... This position is responsible for monitoring enterprise data communication systems and networks, including local area, wide area, and internet, in order to manage the security, integrity, and availability of campus network resources. This includes performing necessary maintenance to support network security and the operational readiness of firewalls and intrusion detection systems. Occasionally, the employee will be expected to respond to after-hours network needs and a rotating on-call coverage.

Required
Qualifications
1.   Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a technically related field plus two years of recent, full-time (or part-time equivalent) network experience or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience. Demonstrated experience configuring and managing routers and switches including Cisco IOS; demonstrated experience configuring, installing and managing firewalls; and demonstrated experience configuring and managing intrusion detection/intrusion prevention, traffic management, and network management systems.
2.   Knowledge: Knowledge of IDS, network management standards, systems testing procedures, and data access methods; knowledge of operating systems; knowledge of distributed applications; knowledge of network management tools and procedures; knowledge of security best practices and common vulnerabilities and exploits; knowledge of security practices and typical business requirements and functions associated with security practices; and knowledge of security-related policies and guidelines.
3.   Skills: Skilled at identifying potential security threats; and skilled at explaining technical information to a wide range of knowledge levels.
 
Preferred
Qualifications
1.   Experience: Bachelor’s degree in a technical field, multiple years of network experience in serving a mid- to large-sized organization or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated experience working in a production environment where system reliability and availability are critical. Demonstrated experience with router and switch management, including Cisco Nexus NX-OS; demonstrated experience deploying and managing enterprise-level wireless infrastructure, preferably Aruba wireless; demonstrated experience installing category 5, category 6, single mode fiber and multimode fiber network wiring and equipment; and demonstrated experience working with network vendors, technical & sales staff in order to determine hardware specifications and system configurations.
2.   Skills: Skilled in configuring and managing Aruba Wireless controllers and access points; skilled at independent research and application of emerging technologies and innovations; and skilled in troubleshooting and resolving advanced IT problems.

Requirements
1.   In accordance with MSU policy, hiring will be conditional upon successful completion of a pre-employment background check.
2.   Must use a computer monitor, keyboard and mouse for long periods of time.
3.   Must be able to respond to after-hours network needs and rotating on-call coverage.
4.   Must lift 50 pounds or more on an occasional basis.
5.   Must climb ladders and carry equipment up a ladder.
6.   Must work in, crawl through, and pull equipment through unfinished spaces.
7.   Must be able to install equipment in low or high temperature, noisy telecommunication closets.
