University Food Services focuses on offering customers the best dining experience possible, using the highest quality products to provide a wide variety of foods and services at a reasonable price. We are committed to student needs, keeping abreast of changing trends in the food service industry, obtaining local & sustainable foods & processes and furthering the educational mission of the University. University Food Services consists of three residential Dining Hall facilities (Harrison, Hannon and Miller), Fat Cat Bakery and Skinny Kitty Salad Department; and the Strand Union retail operations, Catering and Concessions.

Duties and

Under supervision, Culinary Associate I's work to provide excellent customer service and a welcoming dining experience. Areas worked in are: hot lines, salad area, grill area, kitchen, and occasionally check stands and freezer/storeroom areas. Duties include: basic cooking and grilling; preparation of fruits and vegetables; independently preparing a wide variety of hot and cold food products using commercial kitchen equipment; reading recipes and calculating increases and decreases as needed; properly storing food; cleaning and sanitation responsibilities; proper maintenance of kitchen equipment; performing basic record keeping inclusive of time/temperature logs; communicating with lead cooks on daily priorities; accurately monitoring check stand transactions; cheerfully providing excellent customer service while enforcing dining hall policy; moving and stocking inventory; and performing related duties as required. Culinary Associate I's are generally assigned to an area but may be transferred, re-assigned or asked to work different shifts as needed.

The Successful
Candidate Will

The successful candidate will also have the ability to: perform the duties listed in the above description and efficiently operate work equipment; solid understanding of food service and how it operates; good communication skills; prepare a wide variety of recipes in mass quantity; work within a team environment; conduct work in a pleasant and professional manner; excellent customer service; prioritize and organize workload; multitask; have excellent attention to detail, accuracy and timeliness; pleasantly and effectively communicate dining hall policy to a diverse clientele; successfully follow instructions; follow sanitation guidelines and policies; establish and maintain effective working relations with co-workers and the public; positively interact with the public and represent Residence Life/University Food Service to others in a professional and courteous manner.

1.   In accordance with MSU policy, hiring will be conditional upon successful completion of a pre-employment background check.
2.   Position duties require standing for long periods of time; walking up and down stairs while carrying product; moving and lifting containers weighing up to 50 lbs; bending and/or kneeling while stocking product; gripping handles on small kitchen utensils; performing repetitive motions such as but not limited to chopping, stirring, and serving; and will have exposure to cleaning chemicals on a daily basis.
3.   Must be able to work in an environment where temperatures range from over 90 F to -10 F.
4.   This position may also be transferred, re-assigned or asked to work different shifts as needed.
