MSU Library plays an integral role in the teaching, research, and outreach missions of the university. The library is a leader in developing dynamic, engaging and comfortable physical space within a technology rich environment that enable students to discover, create, and collaborate with peers. Students have access to a variety of technical and research assistance from library staff.

Reporting to the Research Commons Librarian this position will provide technical and research support and instruction for library users. The Library Commons Assistant will work at two busy service desks answering questions related to library resources and computer software and hardware. In addition, this person will be cross-trained on various responsibilities in order to maintain workflow during times of absences and short-staffing.

This person must have strong customer service skills, knowledge of library databases, resources, and services as well as knowledge of computer hardware and software. The person in this position will have the ability to work independently and communicate effectively with all library constituents.

Duties and

  • Provide basic research assistance to library users, which includes maintaining knowledge of library resources, databases and service, providing in-person, phone and online assistance to library users, interviewing library users to identify their information needs, and appropriately referring users to librarians.
  • Provide support for Subject Librarians by creating promotional materials, assisting Research Commons Librarian and Instructional Services Librarian with scheduling desk and instruction sessions, providing support for and maintaining the Innovative Learning Studio and supporting assessment initiatives.
  • Provide computer software support to library users which include maintaining knowledge of Microsoft Office, social networking tools, additional software on library computers, the University‚Äôs learning management system, and the Innovative Learning Studio equipment (IPads, Apple TV, etc.).
  • Provide computer and other hardware support to library users by maintaining a strong knowledge of Library commons hardware, computers and peripherals such as scanners, printers, flash drive etc. as well as non-computer equipment such as photocopiers and microfilm machines.
  • Trouble-shoot computer and technology related problems experienced by library users.
  • Instruct users on the use of computer software, hardware and other non-computer equipment through one-on-one instruction, creation of handouts, and training sessions.
  • Provide assistance at the Borrow (Circulation) Desk.

    1.   Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.
    2.   Two years of relevant post-secondary education plus two years of full-time (or part-time equivalent) relevant computer and technology experience or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
    3.   Demonstrated knowledge or aptitude for learning Windows, Mac OS X, and mobile device operating systems and applications, as well as web and multimedia applications.
    4.   Demonstrate an aptitude and interest in learning and providing basic research assistance with library resources and databases.
    5.   Hardware and software troubleshooting skills.
    6.   Demonstrated ability to train and instruct users in computer software, peripherals and non-computer related equipment.
    7.   Ability to produce and maintain relevant technical documentation.
    8.   Ability to independently follow through on tasks and projects to completion and work independently and effectively under minimum supervision.
    9.   Highly effective interpersonal communication skills and ability to establish and maintain effective and productive working relationships with a variety of constituencies.
    10.   Desire and ability to work in a team environment.
    1.   Experience developing and presenting instructional sessions.
    2.   Experience working at a reference desk in a library.

    1.   In accordance with MSU policy, hiring will be conditional upon successful completion of a pre-employment background check.
    2.   Must be able to work in a high-volume customer service capacity.
    3.   Must be able to work at computer terminals for at least 3-4 hours a day.
