Overview

The School of Music in the College of Arts & Architecture at Montana State University offers dynamic programs in music, music technology, and music education, preparing our students for various professions in music, music education and life-long musical enhancement. Inspired by the belief that music is central to human ways of life, the School affirms the University's mission to serve the people and communities of Montana by providing a musically enriched environment. The School is committed to contributing to the musical world through performance, scholarship, composition, leadership, and nurturing the musical expression, understanding, discovery, and creativity of its faculty and students.

 
Duties and
Responsibilities

  1. Music Equipment: all moving, set-up, tear-down, inspection for repair or replacement, organizing crews to assist in these tasks. Assist with annual inventory and locker inspection; report status to Music Administrative Officer. Maintenance checks and moving supervision for Steinway concert grand piano including removal and reattachment of the pedal assembly and monitoring the humidifier.
  2. Concerts: This position will be responsible for setting the stage for concerts and events; moving/managing the equipment involved as well as organizing and supervising a stage crew, whether volunteer or student employee.
  3. Scheduling: creating and supervising a staff schedule for the Music Technology computer lab and for concert recording needs.

List any secondary duties assigned to this position:

  1. Occasional driving or towing of a university owned or rental vehicle for the purpose of moving equipment to/from a concert venue or sporting event.
  2. Requisition supplies for Marching Band/ Pep Band needs.
  3. Consumer product research for purchasing process involving School of Music equipment needs.

All of the duties listed above will involve some degree of independent authority, initiative, judgment and discretion. This position will generally be minimally supervised as a large percentage of the duties will be executed during evening hours around the School of Music concert schedule.

 
Required
Qualifications
1.   High School graduate with at least 2 years of higher education.
2.   Must have extensive knowledge of musical instruments, concert stage set up, marching band operations, and concert band/orchestra operations.
3.   Must have experience driving a 26ft box truck; also towing 20ft trailer.
4.   Must have experience with supply requisition for a group over 100 people.
 
Preferred
Qualifications
1.   Bachelor’s degree in Music or another field which would be relevant to the job requirements.
2.   Successful experience collaborating with professional musicians.
 
The Successful
Candidate Will

The successful candidate will possess the following abilities:

  1. To analyze situations and react in such a way to mitigate damage or risk. The ability to problem-solve and forecast probable outcomes will be extremely useful in the execution of these job duties. Multi-tasking for simultaneous music events will be required on a frequent basis.
  2. Logistical thinking skills will be necessary to perform the job duties successfully.

 
Special
Requirements
1.   In accordance with MSU policy, hiring will be conditional upon successful completion of a pre-employment background check.
2.   This position requires physical labor which includes heavy lifting, driving large vehicles, loading and unloading equipment from storage units. May include activities such as climbing ladders, climbing numerous stairs, walking /standing for many hours at a time during sporting events. Outside work conditions will include both warm and cold temperature extremes.
