The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Montana State University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Mathematics Education at the Assistant Professor level to begin in August 2013.

The mathematics education group seeks a talented and dynamic mathematics educator who demonstrates a strong commitment to teaching undergraduate and graduate mathematics and mathematics education courses, establishing an active research program in mathematics education, and strengthening K-12 mathematics education through professional development and outreach. The candidate must be a mathematics educator whose professional interests and vision complement the broad talents of Montana State’s mathematics education faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, and Montana’s teachers.

As a tenure-track faculty member, the successful candidate must be able to balance and meet the demands of teaching and advising students, conducting a research program that results in publication in high-quality venues, and seeking external funding for research and projects. The normal teaching duties are two courses each semester. The candidate will also serve on both master’s and doctoral committees, participate regularly in summer graduate teaching, and will participate in departmental and university service activities.

1. Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Mathematics Education or Mathematics.
2. Evidence of research potential in mathematics education.
3. Evidence of effectiveness in teaching.
4. Evidence of leadership potential in a second area (e.g., professional development, distance education, pre-service teacher preparation, diversity and equity).

1. Teaching experience at either the elementary, middle, or high school level.
2. Strong mathematics background (graduate mathematics coursework).
3. Demonstrated or potential ability to secure independent external funding.
4. Experience using distance education technologies.

• Support the MSU mathematics education group in providing outstanding undergraduate and graduate teaching and advising, including participating in the rotation of summer graduate teaching (for additional salary).
• Engage in mathematics education research that complements the current faculty members’ research.
• Possess effective interpersonal, oral and written communication skills including the ability to collaborate successfully with faculty, students, Montana’s teachers and public schools, and state and campus decision makers.
• Exhibit willingness to work cooperatively with people of diverse backgrounds (including Montana’s Native American people).
• Possess expertise or interest in teaching distance graduate mathematics education courses.
